MAF to Speed Density ??

Hey guys

I was wondering If you could take an existing MAF TPI
and exchange it with a Speed density TPI with proper ECU
and harness??

SD TPI doesnt require a sensor in front of the throttle
body .. which goes good with my plans for the car.
and from what I hear .. performs well in altitude.

What about performance? which is easily susseptible
to modifcations?

Thanks for the advice

Its totally possible and if you are handy with a laptop, infinitely more tuneable than a maf car. I plan on doing this same swap in the near future. But I am taking everything off a 91-92 car and having it powder coated and what not before its all installed

Here's all you need to know: http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/ecm_swap_730/

I've done the swap myself on my '87 and it ain't that bad, you just need to triple check your work. You can do it!

I use a Gateway P166MMX. The MMX instructions shouldn't matter much for this task, and the 166 vs. 133 shouldn't matter a whole lot either. I've heard of people running this stuff on a 286. (well, the datalogging stuff). TunerPro works great on this laptop as well. I'm running Win98 SE with 128MB RAM and a 6gb hard drive.

? I don't know if I agree with that. I've worked on and tuned both. And I know a LOT of very fast MAF cars. Probably the most difficult thing to tune on a MAF car is the MAF Scalar tables...but that's only for part throttle and/or idle. In WOT, people tend to adjust the fuel by the PE tables...so the myth that your can't adjust the MAF system for high HP applications when you exceed 255 g/sec is, well, just that...a myth.

Yes, SD has a "cleaner" intake but it isn't the big restriction that people think. In fact, I still haven't seen anyone produce any quatitative data on a very high HP application to show that the MAF system is noticeably underperforming a SD setup. And then, the question would always be...was the tune 'optimal' on both setups.

After working and playing with both, about the best reason I have seen for converting to SD is, you need a new MAF or MAF ECM and it's cheaper to install a SD ECM. But if you have a perfectly good working MAF system, I would stick with it.
