voltage problem at idle

alright tonight Im sitting with the stereo playin, and the ac on at a stop light and the voltage meter starts to decline, goes about halfway from the red line to 13. I turn the ac and stereo off and it helps but not all the way back to 13, the alternator is a few months old and the coil is an accel please any help is greatly appreciated. btw I had to splice the wires to the maf and reconnect them. This due to not checking when plugging everything back in and the wires dragging on the ac pulley. Would this affect the charging??

Sounds like my car, but I run an underdrive crank pulley and standard alternator pulley. As long as you have a good battery it won't hurt anything. Once you start moving and bring up the RPM's then the alternator picks back up and recharges the battery. To be sure of no problems put a clamp on amp meter on the alternator and see if it's putting out, check the battery as well.

With the car running, put a digital volt meter on the battery. This will tell you the actual voltage the alternator is putting out while charging the battery (stock voltmeters in our cars are junk) At idle, it should put out between 13-14.2 volts. See what it puts out, then have somebody bring the rpms up. If your only getting 12 volts out, your alternator is not charging.. if your putting more than 14.5 - 15 volts, its overcharging. It doesnt matter how new the alternator is, most likely its a reman, which doesnt mean its good. I went through 4 alts within a year (various reasons, 2 died and overcharged, and my electrical system is perfectly ok, it was just junk Pepboys alts) I also carrry a spare with me, and spare belts. If its overcharging, change it, youll kill your electronics with too much voltage.

Do what 70buick has above.

FWIW, when you buy an alternator, I never purchase the rebuilt units. In my experience, 2 rebuilt alternators went out within 6 months of being installed. Now I will buy only lifetime warranty brand new units.
