TBI to TPI....

I have an 87 TPI setup i want to put on my 91 camaro... will i have any problems swapping the computers? they look like they hook up the same, and i have the wiring harness for the engine bay.... to TBI engines have most of the same sensors as the TPI engines?

they look like they hook up the same,---they do not. you have to repin the stock harness or get a new/different one.

and i have the wiring harness for the engine bay.... to TBI engines have most of the same sensors as the TPI engines?---Mostly the same. Knock sensor is different, TPS mainly.

For the love of ***, SEARCH. This topic has been covered a thousand times.

If you have to pass emissons, early to late model swaps are not legal at least not in Texas.

search for me on the tpi board as I just did this swap on my '92 using a system that just came off an '85 iroc and I used ls1 injectors and an accel base manifold. I ran into every problem in the book.

I'd love to see a link to that law.

I would check with your states laws regarding engine swaps.

Here is some info for Texas engine swaps.

That law was made so that I could not put a carb on my car (older model) or to perhaps TBI and say "Yeah it is fine and pollutets less. It has been proven that TPI is more efficient, all around than TBI. The emmisions on a TPI car even include two catalytic converters. That is basically the same system that also came in the 90-92s (yes I know what the differences are). Go to a sniffer and you will pass more easily with the TPI.

If you adapt your TPI setup to a speed density system (repin your existing harness for the 730 ecm), then you can just say that you have a TPI out of a 91 Z28... I'm going to be doing just that (repin TBI to SD TPI) on my brothers '91 Bird this winter (although I don't have any emissions requirements)...

my main concern was using a non vats computer in a vats car... i can find alot of info about vats, but it never discusses that... anyone have any info on this?

yet another reason to use a SD setup..

Search around a bit, there are many great posts about TBI to TPI conversions (including ones that detail repinning your existing wiring harness to a SD TPI one)..

what exactly is repinning? if i have a car with the V.A.T.S system and a computer without V.A.T.S, will it just work like a regular switch or do i need to do the bypassing technique?

if you have a 90-92 tbi car(lo3) the 90-92tpi engine harness swaps into place change the fuel pump and go....if you had the 3.1 v6 you would change the dash harness as well as the eng. harness...
