Power surging from idle to 2,800rpm
Power surging from idle to 2,800rpm
Karma bit me in the ***, I raced a 71 Nova today some highschool kid that bet $50 I beat him so bad it wasn't funny he paid and I was cruising and saw him broke down on the side of the road, I should have given him his money back but I didn't
Anyhow I was driving along at 70mph 2100rpm went around a small turn and all of a sudden my car feels like it is hopping, I look at the tach and it is going from 1500 to 2200 just up and down and up and down, I pull over asap and kill it, I pop the hood and look for the obvious signs and turn on the electric fan and let her cool down for 30 minutes or so. I start her again and had a nice 10 second idle put her in drive and went from 1k to 750 1k to 750 1k to 750 over and over, killed again popped nothing.
I started her again and let her do her surging and watched exhaust and motor. Checked oil, coolant, tranny all fine...I said "DAMN COMPUTERS" as loud as I could and got in my car and stomped it, suprisingly no surges ran just like it should hauled ***, smooth smooth no bounce in rpms! I was happy then it kicked down to 2800rpm and the surge starts again, and I had no choice but to drive 8 miles home with her in this condition, a few times she would surge at idle and make my tires spin, so I turned on my hazard lights
Make a long story short I am almost positive its my computer but I have no idea on how to go abouts fixing it, there were no warning signs other than an unusual rough idle in the last 2 months. I just don't understand if I stomp it everything is fine and if it cruises or stays at the same RPM it goes all to hell.

I used search and found a guy that had a similar problem but not exactly

I think its a sensor, maybe TPS, maybe IAC, maybe the O2 sensor, maybe the MAF if it has one. The rough idle for the past 2 months is an indication that something is wrong.

Try reseating the chip and adapter socket to the memcal. Assuming by your mods u have at least a "chip".
Weather extremes make them unseat or get poor contact. u can resaet it and more than likley be fine.. Your chk eng lite come on when this occured?

Your year of car usually tells you what kind of setup you have. The 91-92 IIRC where Speed Density and everything before that was Mass Air Flow.
