Is my car a freak? I filled her up today and she drank 18 gallons!!!!

I kid you not! I had about 1/4 tank left when I filled up today. Yet she still took nearly 17.8 gallons before the automatic shut off for the pump turned off.

Anyone else have a tank that drinks that much in one sitting?

The most gas its ever taken during a fill up is actually over 19 gallons. My car is supposed to come with a 15.5 gallon tank, but an extra 2.5 gallons easy? When it took 19 gallons that one time thats 3 1/2 gallons over what the tank is supposed to hold!

I don't think I can fit 3.5 gallons in the filler neck!

Any ideas why my car can drink so much gas in one fill up?

Nope, its done it before. At different gas stations. Hell, just to be sure I'll go there tomorow with a bone dry 2.5 gallon tank and fill that up.

But my car has a history of taking more fuel than its supposed to. My Escort has a 12 gallon tank, and I never really got past 11.8 gallons on fill-ups. But the GTA takes way more than the 15.5 gallons its supposed to hold. All at the same gas stations I fill up the escort at.

Are you sure someone didn't put a larger tank from another car in there? I have a van with a supposedly 20 gallon tank. There have been times when it was virtually empty that I could put 22 gallons in it by filling it slow.

I wouldn't count out a larger tank. As the shield wasn't put back on correctly. Rattled like crazy till I fixed it, but it never fit quite right.

I could very well have an 18 or 20 gallon tank in there. In which case thats cool for road trips.

If that's the case I'd love to know what kind of tank it is.

I know that at the very least the tank has been out before. The filler neck does not sit quite right in the door. A little low and to the right.

Who knows.

I guess the only way to find out would probably be to rip it out. I'd love to have an 18 gallon tank... I can only imagine the possibilities.

Is your gas gauge accurate?

Sometimes gas stations will "flip" a switch and make you pay for 20 gallons when you only got 15. The counter could be off...more than one gas station or not.

Take the tank off and verify yourself.

Yep, either the pump is off at the gas station our you have a larger tank. If a larger tank a lot of us would like to know what kind it is. I know I would love a 20 gallon tank on my 89GTA. Allen

Sure they do mr paranoid.

Either he has a larger tank than hes suposed to, or the top of the tank is leaking and he doesnt realize it.

I've checked for leaks before around the filler neck but haven't found anything. Is there a UV dye that is safe to put in there? I have access to a black light.

Ever since Gas Stations were prosecuted in my area for price fixing, and stations were prosecuted for charging extra gas on unsuspecting customers...I pay attention to how much goes into my tank (based on the digital reader) versus how much my tank is willing to take.

Seems to me it would be prenty simple to check for leaks in the tank, or fuel lines... Doesn't take rocket science to check volume of tank.

I've been filling up at the same stations for the last 8 years. And in those 8 years my 93 Escort has always taken roughly the same amount of gas to fill up. It has never taken more than 13 gallons. Ever.

And the GTA consistantly takes about 16.5 gallons if I take it easy and fill up before it hits 1/4 tank left. Thats with the auto shut off on the pump. If I take it further, it will take over 17 gallons no problem.

So unless every gas station in a 30 mile radius is in a conspiracy against me and my car I don't think the "switch" theory has any merit.

I've checked for leaks before around the filler neck, the most common place. She's a california car, rust is no-where to be found on her. Honestly, I beleive someone put a different tank in there. The tank shield that bolts to the bottom does not fit right and i had to bend it like hell for it to fit, it wasn't bolted down when I got my car. That shield rattled like tomorow wasn't going to come.

They actually have a reprogrammed chip for the fuel readout. They've been busted out here for it too.

I seem to remmeber that the 1le package included a larger tank (I think 18.5 gal) with a dual strainer p.u. assmbly to keep the eng. supplied at 1/4 tank and less in high G turns. :

I don't think its a 1LE tank. I don't have 1LE front brakes, or any other signs of a 1LE car. The only 1LE item I have is the PBR rear brakes, but all GTA's in 89 and up got them I think.

When I'm in a corner at low fuel levels I do experience stutters and starvation. Though it usually doesn't show up till about 1/4 or below.
