helping friend fix firebird

im helping a friend figure out an engine build and have some questions ...his car is a L98 87 formula......he plans on keeping the TPI and he said the only certain heads can be used with that intake ??? and what kind of cam would you have to buy for this block ?hydraulic rolller ? any suggestions on what cam if he was to use the L98 heads ....the car is stock would the L98 have computer problems if you were to put a cam in it ?

thx for any help im waiting for people to tell me to search too lol but i did and im just making sure i got things right you know

I think you can make some switches with the Corvette TPI L98 as well, upgrading slightly. There are aftermarket brands though I haven't really shopped, like SLP

The custom ECM style boxes seem plentiful on eBay and I may also consider one if I do get into mods, but for everyday driving, I'm just concentrating on age issues with mine. At one point we ran it upto 130MPH, but the engine was never really stressed though at one point I remember putting oil in the radiator by mistake... That was BAD!

In '87 GM changed the intake manifold bolt angle...the center two bolts on each head are 72 degrees instead of 90. To avoid drilling/grinding/hacking his stock intake manifold, he'd want to stick with '87 and up gen-1 SBC compatible heads.

The factory cam was hydraulic roller. Between the heads and cam, he'll need software tuning...how much tuning depends on how aggressive he gets w/ the parts selection.

GM HOT cam is a dealer part, slightly lumpy idle, compatible w/ the stock lifters and thrust plate, and makes good power. SLP, Crane, and Comp also make good grinds.

I'd check in w/ Thunder Racing www.thunderracing.com as they stock a good selection and can help match up a good combo.
