Power from 383 TPI

I'm building a 383 out of my stock l98 TPI block. Any idea what kind of power that will produce......will have headers, afr 190s, stock tpi (for now), zz4 cam,3in exhaust, and stock 700r4.

zz4 is too small for TPI in a 383

a fully ported stock TPI has made 410hp on a 236/242 cam with .520/.540 lift. See the TPI shoot out thread.

with 190's and stock TPI and that cam, i would say maybe 320hp and maybe 350 hp max if tuned and ported out alot. TPI is the bottle neck in that combo but it could use more cam

you will make right around 298.4 Kw at the flywheel......

If you understand that you can make some good power with TPI

Maybe I'll go with the 195's and the zz9? Later I'm gonna add the stealth ram.....but budget inhibits that this time around.

Thanks everyone

a fellow third gen'er has a 383 with afr195's hot cam and super ram and he say's he should have about 450hp

get desktop dyno that should give you an idea of the power you will have

see this thread (the shootout thread) https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=273727

the cam is too small for that combo (afr 190s are excellent heads) and you can obviously get away with the tpi LTR setup (see the posted link) but not with all stock tpi components. bigger runners, ported plenum, and at minimum a ported intake base will could potentially yield some power numbers you may not be ready for. the HSR would be a good choice and its relativly inexpensive (compared to others) but i may just be biased

Don't listen to these guys.

Put the stock intake and that zz4 cam on the 383 and drive it.

Once you get some more money, then upgrade to something else.

I drove my gta with 383 and stock intake with other go-fast stuff and used the stock chip and it ran fine. Was it optimal, no. Did it work, yes. With the stock chip it ran mid 13's and it was out of tune.

it aint good to be not optimal but that combo wont hurt much. gas mileage may suffer since it aint tuned right but yeah, you might as well squeeze some power out of it by putting in a decent cam. i would do the hot cam (lt4) before i would do the zz4. both will work great and make decent power.

What cam would be better, the LT4, or the ZZ9? The car is going to be used street only (I have no intention of track or strip.....ok maybe once or twice... ) so I want a lot of bottom end TQ.

like 89 GTA said, the zz4 would be a good match for torque and low rpm power

but of those choices, i would do the zz9. but that is somewhat expensive cam unless you find it somewhere else. for the price you can get any new cam and i like the zz9, Lpe 211/219, comp cams xr276 224/230, or comp xr270 218/224. they make good street combos for 383. nice cams. the xr276 is bigger than the rest and is a good cam for 383 to make some nice power. its what i would run but i am looking for lots of performance. i may step up bigger than that if i go 383. for you, comp cams xr264 to the xr270 is a great cam if you get good heads

You can not just look at duration of that cam and say it is not a good choice. If look at the cam card, or have worked with that cam you know it is a great daily driver cam. There are better, but not for the money.

O.K. It's time to buy pistons....I'm looking @ Keith Black hyper's. What compression ratio should I go with? If I have to run 93 or 94 I don't care, but nothing past that. Heads are going to be afr 195's.

Here's my 383 TPI

HOT Cam
6" h-beams
scat 9000 crank
ebrock heads (64 cc)
Kb pistons (dished )
works out to about 9.5-1
I cam run any gasoline with this setup.

I've had this combo carbed prior to the TPI installation.
Seat of the pants dyno feels very similar at WOT.

Dont know how close specs are on zz4 cam to the hot cam

Sorry 'bout picture size..please resize as needed..

What size hose is that, -8AN? For my 383 I am going with the cc306.
