Buying a performance cam...

I'm really not that smart about cars for the most part, but I know enough to get by. I was wanting to buy a performance cam for my 1991 z28 350 TPI. I just really have no idea what to look for though. I don't really know what is compatible with my car, and I also don't understand what the cams mean when they are talking about a 3500-5000 RPM range or something along those lines, what happens between 3500-5000 RPM if you buy a cam like that??????? I don't understand, much help would be appreciated

That is the operating range of the cam. On the TPI motors, your power will start dying off somewhere between 4200 and 4600 rpm.

What all is done to the motor right now? If this is going to be your first mod to the motor, I would suggest skipping it for now and begin by opening up the exhaust system a little. Headers are a good place to start if you dont already have them. And then you will need a good catback exhaust system too and if you dont have to deal with emissions testing, then you can completely take the catalytic converter(s) off the car and put pipe in their place or you can gut them and make it appear that they are still there.

Just my 2cents

Little more specific please and thank you.

Which headers do you have?
What is the intake?

I'm sure you will read this over and over, but your best bet as far as deciding on a cam is to call one of the manufacturers such as Comp or Crane and tell them what you have and they will tell you what they think you should run based on the info you give them.

Which BBK intake is it? Are you still running the TPI setup?

What leads you to believe that it is not stock?

I'm not trying to be an ***, just trying to figure out exactly what we are working with here. Sorry if i am coming off that way.

Well because it was basically a show car...it has a chameleon paint job, its bored .60 over, performance headers, bbk intake, something to do with edelbrock intake(just remembering what the dude i said when i bought it), k&N air filter, that splits off into two its that weird black plastic thing. So what leads me to think that its different, its i remember him talking about the intake, and he also said something done to my car was from an LT1, don't really remember what he said, but something from an LT1 was in it. The reason I don't really know any of this is because I wasn't there when the car was purchased, because i'm only 17, and it was my dad that was there purchasing it, since my dad is a mechanic, that is where my car is right now in the shop getting some suspension work done, so I haven't really had that much of a chance to check it out...

Sounds like you need to root around your engine bay a bit.

Well you have started well by coming to the place that has a wealth of knowledge with friendly people who can give you good advise. I was in your place only a few months ago about a year after I had a new engine and a camshaft installed in my car. The next step is to educate your self on camshafts. I assume you have a basic understanding of the workings of the 4 stroke internal combustion engine. To educate yourself on camshafts start with this link:

http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/TechSer...IECCTech2.html

Next there are a series of good articles on camshaft threads here:

http://www.domestic-street-scenes.co...viewforum&f=39

Then do a search of this website's message boards by the key word “Cam or Camshaft”

Once you have digested this information, then you can begin to understand camshafts. Then you have to determine what you what your camshaft to do for your engine. Do you what torque in the low to mid range, horsepower in the mid to upper range? Do you want to maintain fuel economy? Do you want lots and lots of power without consideration to fuel economy? Do you have emissions control where you live?

Next, as was suggested ask the technicians at Comp Cams. They are only to happy to give you advise. Then you may want to sit down with your mechanic in your city, but only after you have educated yourself. Hope this helps and everyone here will be happy to give you advise.

Your LT1 part could be the fuel injectors.... pretty common. Also, try to look down under the plenum at the intake base manifold to see if you can see any brand name on it (to find out if the intake manifold is aftermarket). You can see an example in this thread here. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=275840
If you could get some pics up, we might be able to help more (headers, throttle body, runners, etc.)
