Question about gear drive and TPI???

I have a stock 1987 305 TPI that I would like to put a good quality gear drive in for the "sound appeal". The motor will remain stock except breathing and exhaust improvement. MY QUESTIONS: Will the gear drive mess with the antiknock sensor and cause it to signal the computer to retard the spark (as if the car were detonating) ?????? I keep thinking I read an article in a magazine or on this forum warning of this. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY HANDS ON EXPERIENCE WITH THIS ON A TPI MOTOR??? I would prefer first hand experience over theory. THANK YOU in advance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Could try a search, but to answer your question...
Probably the only thing out there right now is the same as always, Pete Jackson 'quiet' gear drive. Its not that quiet IMO. It also wont mess with the knock sensor, just make sure you read and follow the instructions.

from everything ive heard, gear drives do screw with the knock sensors. i don't know if the quiet ones will, but then you would be defeating the whole purpose of getting a gear drive....

I'm running one, have been for 10 years. It does not mess with the knock sensor. Do a search before you speak, its been beat to death here by owners of them. The 'i heard' thirdhand stuff has never materialized, its another myth that continues to propogate.

And it is anything but quiet. Its about as quiet as putting your face in front of an operating fog horn.

Quiet? Not even. Thats a blowmaster with no cats out the exhaust.

oh well, definitely not the first or last time i've been wrong. i thought about going to gear drive but was turned off by all the talk from the manufacturers about knock sensors.

You can always put it in and see if it messes with the sensor. If it does you can always disable it in the chip.

No questions are dumb, everyone needs to learn sooner or later. It replaces the chain and sprockets for more accurate crank to cam timing.

Gear drives do not sound like superchargers.....if you heard the two of them side by side, you would know what I mean.

when he gets on it, it sort of resembles the charger on the Cobras and Lightnings.

The key is the pitch of the sound....I used to get fooled too until I figured out the difference. That's why I said if you heard the two side by side, you would know what I'm talking about.

I don't know much about gear drives...is this what I would need? (5.7 TPI)

I've never heard one before. Are they worth installing?

I wouldn't spend my money on one, but "different strokes for different folks" as they say. If I were building a hardcore motor, for the track I might reconsider, however, I would probably just put on a dry belt set-up then.
