LT4 hotcam vs. stock L98 head (press in studs)

I was wondering if I could get by on running a hotcam on stock L98 heads (with new springs, but stock press in studs)? I was also going to run a HSR intake.

I don't want to pull out one of the studs running this combo, but want a little more power over stock before I start to go crazy with bolting on my AFR's.

I was debating on doing the hotcam and HSR at the same time and then down the line swapping over to AFR's (and possibly a XR 176) and freshening up the motor at the same time (I don't want a rod though my precious AFR's )

What do you guys think?

Do the cam when you do the heads. The hotcam is too much for the stock 083 heads. Not to mention you're going to need to pull the heads off for machine work, so don't waste your time pulling heads twice.

Actually I was going to use a stock size springs (Isky 235-D's) so I wouldn't have to pull the heads. I just want to "get by" until I can get the money gathered up for what I want to do. Plus I am starting the DIY Prom stuff so I need something to learn on before I sink some real money in the motor and mess up the motor while learning to tune the prom.

In case you missed it the first time around.

If you want to get by get a cam that'll work with the stock heads. You can start tuning with the stock cam also. The stock tune can use some tweaking.

Unfortunately I believe there is Retainer to Valve guide clearance issues. I am putting the ZZ4 cam in mine and some people have gotten by without machining but damn close and zz4 is only .510 lift. The hotcam has .525, now if you forgo the 1.6 rockers you might be alright.

It's not too bad though, I had a local machine shop quote me $80 dollars to machine the valve guides and enlarge the spring pockets for 986 springs. I imagine it would be half that if you didn't need the springs done.

That's not bad at all. I was just planing on reusing the stock rockers, save the 1.6's for the AFR swap. I just don't want to bolt my AFR's on a 150k mile shortblock and I don't have the money to have my shortblock gone though right now. I was going to do everything myself to save money because when I checked with my mechanic, he would charge $1000 labor for intake/heads/cam swap on my 150k engine. Fugg that!

Thanks for the info guys.
