350 rebuild?
I had to change my oil pump and noticed my oil smelled like gas. Does that mean i have to rebuild my 350 or can i get the problem fixed for less. What do i do
This may or may not apply since it happened on my carbed 350 built for my '77 Vette, but I had almost the exact same problem with my 350 before I did a full rebuild, down to a dipped and bored block. I too smelled gas in my oil, and I might add, very noticably. It sprung up as the result of two problems, one or the other not doing much, but because they existed together, I had gas in my oil. First I had a plug that wasn't firing. I honestly didn't even notice this for many nice weekend. Normally most or all of the unburnt fuel would have been ejected with the exhaust stroke, and spewed out into the air. I did smell the gas in the air, which led me to testing the plugs. Now, to the other problem. The rings in this old 350 had lost their "Spring tension" and did not maintain an equal seal on the cylinder walls. Odds not being in my favor, the cylinder with the bad plug was just about the worst of all with shot rings. So all the unburnt fuel was also making it's way past the rings, and down into the oil. There were other problems caused by both symptoms, but basically having a bad plug and bad rings added gas to my oil. Your problem may or may not be like mine, and a rebuild was my best option. I would suggest that to you. Maybe a few steps first though, like checking all your plugs, and checking to see if your mixture is a little rich. Hope some of this babbling helped...
