Fuel pump stuck on

Yesterday afternoon when I got in my car to come home from work, I turned on my key, listened to my fuel pump kick on, and it just kept on running, and running, and running...... For some reason it didn't shut off after the 2 second interval like it normally does. Started car and drove home and it shut off after I turned off the car. This is the only time it's done it but I'm sure, with my luck, it'll do it again when I have to leave the car and end up running my battery down or I'll have to disconnect the battery to get it to shut off. I drive a truck and leave the car sit for several days sometimes while I;m gone on a run.

Any ideas why it never shut off and what to look for?

I recently had a problem with a defective oil pressure sender that kept the fuel pump running all the time...

It stays on only when the key is turned to the acc position and forward? Shuts off when the key is pulled? Test the f/p relay. Probably be better to post in electronics board and have Trickster take a stab at finding a schematic for you to trace.

I turned on the key and I always listen to the pump turn on and then turn off after the 2 second interval. It never shut off. I turned the key back off and it kept on running. At that point, not knowing what to do, I started the car and drove home. Hasn't done it since...yet. It probably will though.

Notice my sig...this is a TPI swap into an Olds Cutlass using a Howell harness. It's pretty much the same as an OEM type harness with the exception of no connections for the a/c or cooling fans. It is the 50 state emission legal harness. In case anyone doesn't know, Bill Howell was one of the developers of the TPI.

Thanks for pointing that out. And in case you didn't know, this board is by and for 3rd gen GM F-body cars, not grocery getters.

I also thought it was to help people with problems with TPI setups.....

You'd be surprised how much of my car is "F-Body"

Not sure what data got you to that conclusion, the forum guidelines are pretty clear about 1982-1992 Camaros and Firebirds.

Take the chance to wire in a fuel pump cutoff switch. Then hide it. Damned if any criminal will be able to steal your ride after that.

305q_ta86 That's not a bad idea...

kevinc: I'm not trying to start a feud and I won't continue this conversation after this. I simply came in here trying to find out things about the parts of my car that DO pertain to the TGO board. I noticed that you have an LS1 in your 82. Does this mean you're not welcome on the 4th gen board? If my questions that do pertain to the parts of my car that came on a third gen bother you...then please refrain from commenting and simply look over them. I'm sure there are many others on this board that are more than glad to help.....

Sorry to the Administrators for this...I didn't bring it on on my own.

I expect that if I went on a 4th gen board with "I've got a non-4th gen with an LS1 and a non-factory wiring harness..." asking for help I'd probably get trashed for wasting bandwidth off topic.

However, that never happened.

http://www.chevytalk.org/ is an excellent broad-spectrum board, FWIW.

And if I bought a harness from Howell, I'd be contacting them for troubleshooting help. They are a solid shop and should be able to provide assistance.
