TB Interchange

I performed a search and couldn't find what I was looking for, but I'm sure this has been addressed many times. I have an 89 and newer manifold, plenum, and runners. I also have two throttle bodies. One is the 89-92 style, the other is the 85-88 style. The older throttle body is in much better shape, and I'd rather use it on my setup. My question is, other that the different style throttle cables, is there any other problems with running an 85-88 throttle body on the newer style plenum (i.e. vacuum issues, egr issues, etc.) ???

Wow, this board is really useful these days. Probably one of the most simple questions for anyone familiar with tpi systems to answer and not even one response. Gee thanks guys.

Throttlebodies from 85-88 are the same and must be matched to plenums from 85-88. To work properly on 90 and up plenums ... oh why bother? You already decided you couldn't wait for an answer so you apparently helped yourself.

Excuse me for being so "impatient". I posted that like over a week ago, and it was so far down on the board I figured I better bump it back up or it would never get answered. And still, Red Devil gets right to the part I really need to know and decides a smartass reply is more entertaining than actually helping a fellow member. That's exactly what I need to know is if the older tb will work on a 92 plenum. Anyone?????

You don't have to be an "expert" to find the rest of what Red Devil was going to post, as a matter of fact I believe that's why he cut it short.

I just cut & pasted what he did say in a web browser search.

From Jim's Performace
NOTE: Throttle bodies 85-88 are the same and must be matched to plenums 85-88. To work properly on 90 and up plenums a hole (1/2") must be drilled, between the intake openings where the throttle body mounts, to allow for passage of idle air from the IACV to the plenum. 89 and up throttle bodies will work on earlier plenums without modifications

The thottle linkage cable might not hook up they changed it in the later years you might want to look into that.

Whichever is different, use the 85-88' cable.

Cool, thanks for the post from Jim's performance Garcia! I've got the correct throttle cable for the 88 TB already. However, I'm kinda queasy about drilling holes unless I know exactly how to go about it. I might just get the missing pieces I need for the newer TB I have and just use it. In fact, all the missing pieces I do need are the same on the older one (top plate, IAC/Coolant plate, and throttle stop screw). The only other thing I need to pick up is the newer style throttle cable I guess. Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it!
