It would be easiest to loosen the rear axle from everything. Just let the torque arm hold it somewhat in place. I have done it before with the exhaust still wrapped around the axle, you just need to move it around a lot to find the best position. Your best bet would be to remove it completely. As far as the tank itself, its a little tricky, when you get it loose you will be able to see which way it needs to go. Have a friend help and remember to smile.

drop the rear end a little take the exhaust off by unbolting the pipes if you can but it will come out in one piece if you take off the passenger shock, lca ,etc. the filler neck shouldnt be that big of a problem just needs al little convincing

Unbolt the fuel and brake line brakets. Unbolt the brake hose at diff cover. Remove the panhard rod. Unclip the tank vent from braket and disconnect the sender plug from body. Leave the main fuel line connected till very end because it will not stop leaking gas everywhere. remove lower shock nuts the turn shock bottoms 180 deg. remove the swawbar links.Lower the diff till it won't go any farther. Remove both rear spring and upper mounts. remove upper panhard brace and 2 7mm screws holding sheet metal. remove exhaust from the cat all the way back. remove heat shields. remove the tank strap bolts and lower tank on to the diff. rotate tank towards the front of the car and pull neck from body. rotate tank towards rear of car and remove.

funny you should mention that. once i dropped the axel down and pulled out the tank i saw a hole where someone cut in an access panel. looks like they did a pretty good job though nice and clean hard to notice. damn i hate when people screw with stuff.

That sucks, well if goes out again you won't have to drop the tank. At least it wasn't butchered.
