Name these wiring harness connectors!

Hi all,

I've got a LB9 engine and harness from an '89 IROC I'm intending on slipping in my car, and although I've been able to work out most of the connectors, there are a few that have me beat. So without further a due, here we go...

This first one has a tan wire with a black stripe going through the connector.

I think the tan wire with the black stripe is the one you disconnect when you set the timing. Can't remember what they actually call it. Still think about the others. Is you car TPI or TBI?

Red and black. This is somehow connected to the positive battery lead.

Last one, it seems to control something relating to vacuum. Beside this connector is the distributor and not too far away is the remote coil.

My car is TPI, or at least it will be once the engine is installed.

I know the tan wire you're talking of, but I think that's closely situated near the distributor isn't it? The pic I posted is of a wire much further away.

I'll take a stab.

First wire tan/blk is timing disconnect or whatever the proper term is.

Second is TPS I'm thinking.

3, 4??

red/black wire from battery cable probably ran to power distribution block again for fans, or was just split to go to fan relay(s)

6 prong weatherpack is fan(s)

red/orange connector is probably also fan. I believe the stock fan harness is "removable" without cutting wiring.

Last pic is kind of hard to tell, but looks like EGR solenoid.

There is a link in the tech section or whatever here with the wiring manual for at least '86. Most of the wire colors/connectors are probably similar enough, if not the same, to use with your setup.

Ta for that.

Second is TPS I'm thinking.

I've identified TPS OK, but this connector is on a different part of the harness. Almost behind the engine on the left side, not too far from the lock up connector plug.

I have looked in the tech section and elsewhere on the Internet and this helped me identify most of the connectors so far, except I couldn't for the life of me find on the diagrams what all the above were for.

Even my '88 wiring manual sucks, at least IMO. None of the pages give a good overview of the entire system, which doesn't help when dealing with (especially) coolant fan wiring. I mean it does show you a lot, and is much better than nothing, but makes no sense when you are dealing with the fans, especially since there were at least a couple of differernt wiring schemes, single or dual fans.

In any case, did you have the electric fan harness with that setup? I really really think that is electric fans. IIRC, that is the ONLY place that a 6 prong weatherpack connector is used.

If you have the pinout of the ECM for your application, see which one is for the primary fan. I would be willing to bet its one of the two smaller wires on that connector. (either brn or tan/wht) The two large black ones should be the ground for each fan of a dual setup.

You got me.

I've never had an ESC car. I always used big cap TPIs on systems I built.

No sorry, I didn't get the fan harness.

A diagram I found on the Internet had the wiring for an '89 Trans Am and the closest thing I could see that related to wiring was a wire for the coolant fan relay. It was green and some other colour (white I think).

Another diagram for an 86 F VIN car I came across has a single cooling fan and it uses a black/red and black wires for the fan so you are most likely correct.

Can you tell me please what each of the wires for the VSS do? I presume black is a ground?

Thanks for the info on the other pics!

1 ESC Connector

2 For the wiper motor

3 That is for the HVAC stuff. it plugs into the HVAC wiring harness that gotes to the blower motor and part of the harness that is coming out the firewall in the middle on the passenger side.

4 Underhood light I think

5 ECM Power

6 Fan Harness stuff

7 I think that is for the ECM power or main fan power. If the pic was bigger and showed the general area it was in I'd could tell ya better.

8 EGR Solenoid connector.

Does the plug and socket for picture number #5 connect together, or do they plug into something else? They appear to be on the same piece of cable.

This is just up from the fan harness plug and fan relay that's in picture. If this isn't descriptive enough I'll take a picture.

I thought I knew which connector was for the wiper, and this is it here below. What is this connector do? I don't think it's cruise control, I compared the colour of the wires on the connector with diagrams from an 86 car. I'd appreciate some help with this one too please...

I would say the last one is the EGR solenoid connector.
Mounts almost under the remote coil.

Thanks for that, but I don't think it is. The connector above is on the left side of the engine. The remote coil is on the right side of the engine.
