hard to start car

I have a 1990 TPI 350. Every time I start my car it turns over a dozen times or more before it starts, but most of the time I have to play with the gas pedel to get it going. Once the car gets going, the RPMs are always erratic rising and dropping between 500-1200 RPM. As soon as I take the car out for a drive the car seems to fix itself and the RPMs return to normal.

I don't know where to start, Any Help would be appreiciated, Thanks Bobby.

Start with the basics. Check base timing. Inspect the plugs. Check fuel pressure. Look for obvious vacuum leaks. Clean the throttles and IAC ports.

THINK IAC motor and TPS settings!

mine used to do that until I replaced the IAC--do search an or may be in the tech articles about how to clean IAC as well as TPS--If I remember right Vader posted an article on the complete procedure.

I had the same symptoms. A few of my injectors were leaky. I also had to play with the gas pedal for it to start quicker.

First thing I would do is check your fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vacum line off it and see if there is gas in it. Then I would get a fuel pressure gage and watch your pressure when the car is turned off. Here is a graph of my fuel pressure after I shut the car off when I had leaky injectors:
