Idle problem....how do I do a smoke vac test?

I am having an idle problem with my TPI.

First off I have a weird combo for you guys.

73' Chevy Nova, 283 motor w/ 10 to 1 compression, decent size cam with very noticeable lope, completely stock TPI maf setup w/ ported plenum. 19* injectors, New maf, new coolant sensor, new O2 sensor, new Tps sensor, new IAC valve, cold start vlv is gone, Egr is blocked off, and prolly more stuff I can't think of now.

It is occilating up and down around 900 to 1200rpms. The chip is set to 900. I have done all the min idle procedures with little change. Fuel pressure is where it is supposed to be. Timing is at 8 BTDC. I don't have access to a scanner so I don't know anything other than there is no codes at all.

I have learned in my past to spray B-12 carb cleaner on the intake where it meets the heads or anywhere else there is negative presure to see where a vacume leak might be. I would love to do this but I don't want to mess up my paint job on the entire thing.

HOW DOES THIS SMOKE TEST WORK???

THANKS!!!

Joe

When the carb cleaner hits a vacuum leak, it's sucked into the engine and raises the idle.
