TBI-TPI conversion help!
TBI-TPI conversion help!
Got a few questions If anyone wants to take a stab at em.
This is being done to an 88 formula 5.0 TBI
I was told TBI heads will work with a TPI intake, Is it a big hp/tq difference between the two or is it negligible? Any idea on the #'s?
Will a TBI ecm run a TPI providing i swap the two plug injector harness with a 9 plug TPI injector harness, and if so is it simply unplugging the old and plugging in the new?
I know a TPI requires a bigger fuel pump from a TBI setup. i have changed pumps in 3rd gens before and its a royale pain in the A**. Can i run an external pump like a T-rex, or do i need something bigger?
What is the recommended puel pressure for a TPI?
Do i need to change The throttle cable and tranny kick down cable or will the TBI ones work?
Im trying to make this a ONE night swap start to finish so any advice or "tricks of the trade" is greatly appreciated beyond the questions above

You need to read this first, then ask questions.

The heads will work, you'll loose HP as compared to the TPI heads. Maybe something in the 10-20HP range...assuming stock for stock swap. Torque curve will definitely be lower as well.
TBI ECM doesn't have the correct drivers for the TPI injectors (least I was told this on the DIY_PROM forum a year or so back.
Yes, TPI requires a different pump...about a60 PSI pump (TBI is in the 15 PSI range).
Unsure on the cables, etc. There is a tech article detailing a TBI to TPI swap on the main page, might be worth a look.
I seriously doubt you be doing a one-nighter...unless you have a TV slot with Chip Foose as the project manager

You need to change the tranny cable as well, the TBI one is shorter.
Your fuel pressure should be set at 43.5 psi, but yes you can use an external pump.
Your doing this at night? You know what happens at night time right? Your going to drop bolts into every uncovered hole in your engine. Don't ask why, it just happens that way.

Thanks guys, i plan to do it on a saturday afternoon into the night, its me and a buddy doing it. he has a well lit shop with all air tools and a lift. I hope its a 1 day project to say the least
Not trying to hack on you dude, but it sounds like you need to do a lot more research before attempting your swap. None of your cables will work on the tpi (throttle, TV, cruise) as they are all longer than the TBI cables. Also, if your tpi is 89 or newer, the throttle cable it uses has a completely different end on it. You can use the TBI engine harness, but you have to do some repinning and use some different connectors in a couple of places. It's easier to just get the correct harness. The TBI ecm won't work with TPI period. I guess, in short, what I'm trying to say is you ought to do a lot more reading in the tech articles on this site and round up all the parts you're going to need for the complete changeover, or you're going to be without a running car for a looong time.
