Maf

Is there a difference between '85 and '86 MAFs. I know the '85 MAF operates off of a burn off module and the '86 uses relays. Does this change the sensor design from '85?

sorry, not a really helpful answer, but i'd be interesting for me if the 86 - 89 MAFs interchange

i just compared the numbers on the sensors, they are different, but they look like serial numbers; the sensors looks absolut identical

I believe you can use an 86 t0 89 Maf on an 85 car. But cannot use the 85 Maf on an 86 to 89 car.

The 1985 TPI MAF is a variable frequency output (FM) and the 1986-later TPI MAFs are a variable voltage (analog) output. I have heard of some people using the analog MAF in place of the FM on '85s, but I would strongly suspect the linearity of the input to the ECM as a result of the signal conditioning at the MAF module. It might work, but likely isn't a correct intake air value reported to the ECM.

Lets suppose that the MAF on my car was replaced with a newer (86-89) one before I owned it. Could this be the cause on my idle issues?

i got a parts 1988 camaro, and it is the MAF setup. I was wondering if the '88's were controlled by a mass air flow burn off relay? and there is a MAF power relayy as well as a fuel pump relay right? any more relays that should be taken out for a swap?

Really need one poster...one topic...

That said...

Wrong/bad MAF could cause idle prolems, but so can 40 other things

An '88 MAF uses a burnoff relay (when car is shut off to self clean the filiment), MAF power relay to supply voltage to the MAF, and all TPI cars, regradless of Year/MAF/SD use a fuel pump relay. (PS I made a reply to your other thread, or one very similar) so try to keep things on topic to the original poster so he gets his/hetr help, and you'll get your help on your thread
