very odd fuel pump problem.. heat related

had this problem for the last 2 months.. want to see if anyone has a cure...

heres the short short version...on long drives, when it is warm or hot outside... and i have 3/4 of a tank or less... my fuel pump(a new stock LT1 pump) starts to whine.. it continues until it stops whining and just quits.. and the car sputters and dies, due to the fuel pump ...

my dad thinks its "cavitation" in the fuel tank.. because if i undo the gas cap.. it makes a large hissing noise..

BUT after i take the gas cap off.. there is heat comming from the filler neck.

heres the crazy part.. if i make it to a gas station BEFORE it dies out on me.. and i fill the tank.. the whine goes away and its driveable... which leads me to beleive the pump is just heating up and dying, and the new gas i pump into it, cools it off..

anyone else have this problem? any solutions?

Sounds more like they didn't get the fuel pump down far enough in the tank and you are just running out of gas. They have to be set near the bottom of the tank not high or in the middle. I get to do that same project myself (for the second time) here shortly....

well i dont think its that... because this problem only happens on extended driving periods and really hot outside..

i can drive around town and freeways and not have problems.. i cant take the tank all the way down to nothing and it wont do it.. thats why i know its heat related..

Could be related to the pressure control valve.
See her near the bottom.

Canister purge system not bleeding off the vapors or the fuel tank vent valve is not letting air into the tank.

HAve the part number if i find it I will post it. If u search, it is here somewhere, its how I got it

I have the same problem. Mine just dies sometimes after a long drive or sitting in traffic too long. It has always done it, ever since I bought it. The tank is almost hot to the touch. After it dies on me, I can here the pump not turn on, then it will prime the system, but only for a second. What else could it be?

sediment clogging the inlet pre-filter. Have the tank flushed clean, and replace the in-tank filter/sock if it keeps doing it.

Possible it could be sediment, but seeing this on many many thirdgens I doubt it.

If the fuel tank vent valve doesnt work, it actually causes the tank to suck in due to the fact that fuel is being pulled out but air is not being pulled in to off set it.

The other flip side is their is a canister issue where it is not purgint the vapors and pressurising the tank.

Either situation makes it very very hard for the pump to do its jib
