going from a carb to TPI

so i recently found out one of my friends has a complete TPI setup for sale (everything but the wiring harness), and with me going off to UTI this fall, and only being able to have one vehicle i was almost needing to sell my camaro. my concerns were cold winter starts with a carb, and fuel efficiency. i figure with FI, i will be able to start the car in the winter easier and get a little better gas milage. my first question is would this switch help me out with those things, and my second question is i have a decently aggressive cam (.454" lift, and 216 duration at .050") would this mess up the ECU at all? is there a way i can tune it or should i put a milder/stock cam back in?

also how hard is it to rip out whats left of my old harness and completely wire up the new one?

thanks, Adam

The cam appears to be mild enough to use by the specs you gave but the real determining factor is the Lobe Seperation Angle. You really need a LSA in the 112 or higher to make the computer happy. Have you considered using the Perfect Wiring TPI Harness?...Or even their new system with a dedicated ECU? I'm attempting to go back to TPI soon and the factory harness is a rat's nest of wires. The Perfect Wiring set-up installed in a friends truck was a snap to install. I'm jealous.

Universal? They can be installed in any vehicle but they are for F-car TPI's.

You'll need to get an external pump specifically for FI.

then you need to either go to a junk yard and pull a complete one(ya.. try and find that) or buy one from either E-bay or a member from here..

i found one guy locally that has a 92 vette setup, he's willing to part with the ECU and wiring, but will it work with a late 80's setup off of a 305?

And pick up a GM service manual for your specific year of harness. It will really help you!!

I'm not sure if 92 Vette's had VATS but I would avoid it if I could. Just another expense.

if you dont get that ecm and harness can you find out how much the guy wants for it if he still has it. i have a 727 ecm from a 90-92 vette and i need a harness in a bad way and dont want to spend the cheese for a new one if i can find a good used one. it will beat the hell out of putting the 2 maf harnesses i have together for one speed density harness.
