Can the tpi flow enough??
I know the tpi system isint the best for flow considering it can choke a 350. Well I am thinking of building a 355 or 383 and I was wondering if even a beefed up tpi system could handle it. I was thinking like tpis bigmouth base, large runners, bigger injectors and a 58mm throttle body, computer reprogram. Or do you think I would be wasting my time.
TPI
Just depends on what you want I guess. I like the looks of the TPI and there are people on this board that have fairly quick TPI cars. Most people take the easy way out and install a mini ram or something of that sort for more high rpm horsepower. I kind of like the torque the TPI makes myself and if I were to internally mod my engine in the furure I would keep the TPI on mine and play with runners, throttle bodies, better bases etc....I like a challenge anyway, besides, if you go to the big NHRA races you still see a few tuned port cars running in stock classes and they have them going pretty damn quick, pretty neat stuff to watch. Thats just me though. Larry.

I ported my stock tpi unit. I felt a difference. I hogged it out pretty good. The throttle responce much much better and my top end it better. I'm still in the process of tunning the chip. My next step is to stroke it maybe next year. I would like to post my pics but there all over 1MB so it's kinda a pain in the butt. if you interest i'll email you a zip with all my pics in it.

Yes it is not optimal, but I went with the Edelbrock base and ASM runners on my 383. Yes the RWHP isnt there but I put almost 400 TQ to the tires on a stockish tune. Its fun on the street lol

For the money you'll spend on a big mouth base, large tube runners, and porting the plenum, you could have already bought a different intake like a stealthram or miniram. You'll still make tons of torque and get some good horspower. If you put tpi on a 383, you'll have more torque than is usable. If you race you'll be unhappy cause you won't be able to plant the tires. I have a miniram on a 350 and I still have to watch it on a holeshot or it'll fry the tires all through first and halfway through second.

Ehh I smoke em through 3rd lol. I Have every suspension component replaced with aftermarket too and new tires. But I like the way TPI looks too

tires
What I meant was tires like BFG drag radials or M/T drag radials, some sort of sticky street legal tire. On the suspension I meant a suspension leaning towards straight line hooking, like adjustable torque arm to move the pinion angle around and change the instant center, lift bars, etc....to plant the rear tires. Most people on here are geared toward stiffening the car to make it handle but that does nothing for straight line acceleration. Torque is a wonderful thing, no reason to kill it, just work with the suspension and plant it. If not, you will have a hard time at the stop light drags
I use the new mickey thompson drag radials myself, they work wonders over a set of plain old street rubber, Firday night I tore up an all wheel drive turbo car, a foreign car of some sort that was modded heavily, then later I blew off a small crotch rocket, man he was shocked,,,,
I couldn't have done any of that without the drag radials and lift bars, 1.5 60 foot times are wonderful
burning rubber is fun but I could not win like that...plus the fact that my car was nearly dangerous wagging it's tail at 60 mph with stock tires, it made my butt pucker...no thanks,,,Larry.

I 60 ft in the 1.7s regularly, but on the street it's a whole different ball game. I run the BFG drag radials, but they're starting to suck so I'm switching to the MTs.
tires
Thats cool, I like the BFG's, they worked good for me when they are new, after a while they don't work as good, maybe all the heat cycles, I don't know. I think you will like the new M/T's, they are some hookin tires, I know the DOT drag classes are still complaining about them
I don't think they will last as long on the street as the BFG's do but they sure do hook nice. Larry.

I heard the MTs dont last as long as the BFGs but I only got a couple thousand miles out of those(BFGs). I think the MTs will be race only and Ill throw some Nitto drags on my firehawk rims for the street. TPI torque is fun, but buying tires all the time gets old.
Tires
Wow, a couple thousand miles? You must be beating it at every stop light
I get about 5-6,000 miles out of a pair of BFG drag radials if it is street only use, if I make regular trips to the track that number will shrink considerably. The MT's I have now hook much better and are also a little softer, I don't suspect they will last as long. I have tried the Nitto's and didn't like them much as far as hooking goes, they seemed to be the hardest compound of the 3 and would probably last the longest but they were a little too slippery for my taste.
I know what you mean about buying tires, I am hard on them and every time I turn around I am buying rear tires for one of the 6 cars that I beat on
I just got a new pair of MT's for the Chevelle, the previous pair was down on the wear bars and maybe a little past that, my Firebird will be due for new rear tires by the end of the year, a few more burnouts will finish them off,, and late last year I had to put new rear tires on the Monza. And it just so happened that the wifes jeep CJ got a soft ball size knot on one of the BFG all terrain T/A's and all 4 of them were worn too far down to just put 1 tire on so I had to pick up a set of 4 and install them about a month ago
The tire companies love me, then again so do the gas companies,
Oh well, enough rambling, later, Larry.
