Fitting TPI to different car what parts do I need?
Fitting TPI to different car what parts do I need?
I am posting this question on behalf of someone. They have a 89 TPI set-up and want to fit it to a car that never came with TPI.
Currently he has a MAF ECM but I said to him I would go with MAP. Saves him money not having to buy the MAF, Relay etc..
If he wanted to go with a MAP set-up what parts are needed for the install like sensors etc...
I can think of the follwoing:
Wirring Harness (730)
ECM 730
Knock Sensor
Memcal
O2 sensor
Water Temp Sender
Map Sensor
TPS
Fuel Pump Relay
MAT sensor
ESC control box is not needed since the MAP knock sensor connects directly to the ECM correct?
If anyone can think of any parts that are needed can you please list them. He is wanting to get this done ASAP.
If people know the part numbers that would be an awesome help too!
Thanks,
Mike

i dont believe the 89 TPI setup plenum will work. its not setup for speed density. SD had a slightly different plenum

The water temp sender is what sends the temp reading to the dash, not the ecm. If you order a part by that name, you will get the wrong item. What you need is called the CTS sensor.
Yes, the esc circuitry is no longer an external module on MAP setups, but is located inside the memcal.
You need to make sure that you run the correct prom and knock sensor for a 90-92 TPI setup, specific to the engine size.
The only sensors from a MAF setup that are different for MAP are the following: knock, and MAP. All the others can be reused on the MAP setup.

I would have thought the EGR would be already on the plenum as it is mounted underneath it.
Thanks for the input guys. Yeah I think he might need specific throttle cable attachments. I am not sure what transmission he will be running but I think it might be the T400 so that should not be any problen either as it does not have OD.
I suggest him to go the MAP router probably end up being cheaper and less expensive to replace a MAP sensor then a MAF.
Thanks once again!

The style of EGR was changed in 1990 when they went to speed density. I don't know enough about what you have to know if it will work properly. Just a heads up.
On my 1989 with MAF I'm considering going to SD. The EGR may well be an item I will have to change out. Going to give the existing one a go and see if it will work.

Allen You should be fine as my 86 EGR works fine. In the end of it all though It is disabled as I read about numerous posts about the EGR and what the verdict was if you don't spend 90% on the hwy then it hs no real advantage and possibly a disadvantage. So I disabled it anyway.

VSS is the only 1 you left out of your list at the top.
if he goes with electric fans, the relays & fan switch for them.

he may not need it, but he may well have a problem with dying or surging when coming to a stop without it.
i did have some problems with both without the ECM seeing the VSS signal on my car.
also without it, it will keep kicking the check ehgine light on.
VSS may also be needed for the EGR to work properly.
i would also recommend hooking up a park/neutral switch if he uses an auto trans along with a A/C input if he is going to run A/C.

Read through this for the Speed Density sensors:
http://tpiparts.net/90_92_speed_density_sensors/
Vss is at the bottom, and it affects alot more things than what has been mentioned so far.

my advice to him would be to buy an aftermarket harness and call it a day.. i fought with trying to use a stock harness in my 79 malibu for over a week, and it still dont run right. Im going to just fork over the dough so i can get it straightend out...

using the stock harness wasn't a big deal for me, i spent a few hours laying it out labeling the wires for the inside the car & making some repairs. once i got the motor in, it only took me about 5 or 6 hours to get it up & running, that includes enlarging the hole for the computer harness in the firewall & getting it sealed up.
i think opening up the harness & inspecting every wire end to end & then repairing anything i thought may cause problems saved me a lot of headaches.
