Evaporative Emissions Canister

Does anyone know just how this thing works? What would be the effects of removing it, and what would be the proper way of doing so?

I took mine out of the original place and put over the front dam and underneath engine compartment(if that makes sense).

Didn't even have to extend any wires or hoses.

The canister has a vaccum line on it that gathers gas vapors from the gas tank and when activated by a solenoid, introduces the fumes back through the TB, where they are later burned.
Through prom tuning it can be removed I'm sure....but just removing it without any prom work will throw a code...I would think anyway. I have an SLP CAI setup, and as metioned I moved mine to the nose of my T/A.

Okay, I'm going to pull it out when my K&N cone gets here and we'll see if it throws a code, I will have to vent the line that was hooked up to it though, correct? Ive had it off before when I was doing a head gasket and ran it without the canister a few times, and dont recall seeing a code.

I don't think there is anything that would throw a code for the evap canister not working. I have mine in the car still but have debated removing it just to get a few more vacuum lines out of the engine bay. As it is right now, I have it under the stock location on my bird. Cut a hole for my CAI and the canister fits right next to my K&N.

There is no harm in removing it per se.

Depedns on how u like to do things.

The cansiter purge rate of fuel vapor is figured for in the stock fueling tables.

If u remove it, you will have constant fuel vapors being bled from where ever the unhooked line is from the fuel tank.

If u cap the line, u run the risk of frying your fuel pump due to excessive pressure in the fuel tank.

If its stock or even modified, it does no harm for performance and actually helps emmisions and effiency as gas that would go into the atmospere actually gets stored and burned in your car later.

later

I'd keep it, unless you are in the hobby of fixing something that's not broken, or have a show car and just don't want it under the hood for whatever reason.

Like I said I not sure if it would throw code but,I know for a fact on some other other cars(diffrent models) if the solenoid goes bad on a purge canister it throws a check engine light...but that is a whole diffrent car.....maybe thirdgen's don't react to unplugging it.

When I unscrew my fuel cap is there supposed to be pressure that blows off? This seemed kinda odd to me. The tank isnt vented is it?

EDIT: I took the canister out. I also removed the hose going from the hard fuel line to it and ran that hose down and under the car just to vent the fuel vapor away. The line that returns the fuel vapor to the throttle body is out, and Ill have to get a vacuum cap for that. Now, quick question: the second hose on the return line goes to a small plastic line under the plenum, which hooks up back at the EGR solenoid under the coil. I dont need to plug this line do I? I think that just lets the computer see if the purge is worrking correctly, (which it wont see any pressure when the purge solenoid is activated now - probably throwing a code ). Am I correct? Or is it a source of vacuum and needs to be plugged?

On a seperate side not - i didnt see one of these canisters on my moms '98 SS, how do they control fuel vapor on new cars?

i took it out of her car when we did the SLP CAI
i did it more for cleaning the compartment up
no error codes or anything

an ODBII car might throw a code, but i doubt an ODBI will.

I took it out of my car and it threw a code. I was just venting the vapors via an extended vacuum line out of the engine bay. I just took the solenoid that plugs into the harness off of the top of the canister, plugged it in and let it lay under my CAI. Code went away. BTW I didn't check the codes to see which exact one was thrown. I just know that when i took it off the light came on and when I plugged the solenoid, even though it's not connected to any lines, the light went off.

I would be interested to see what code you are getting. Ive been driving mine for at least a week now with nothing plugged in and no code.
