Ignition boxes?
My dad was told someone had luck with a Mallory 6A ignition box to get his ZZ4 to run correctly. I assume he had a carb, but multiple sparks are a good thing, right? Anyone use one on their TPI?

i use the MSD 6a boxes and the digital box
i like them
i'm a fan of any box of this type
i have always felt improvements from better gas mileage, better idling, easier starting, more power
i have had them on various cars too.
just my experieinces

I had an MSD 6AL on my old Plymouth Sundance. Don't laugh too hard, the car came with it! lol..
Anyways, when I took it off to sell it, I did feel quite a big difference up top, and this was on a non-performance motor. The motor didn't like to rev as freely up top. I'm trying to decide what box I want to buy for the bird, now that it likes to rev a bit higher.

I use a MSD 6AL on my TPI. Works great. I had to get a capacitor for it since it was interfering with the ECM, though.
I had one on my VW and the idle smoothness was night and day. Much better.

How much are these boxes? I would love a smooth idle and better gas mileage. I just thought people got those things for the hp gain.

I want it for the smoothness and gas mileage mainly too. I don't really care about making more power with it per se, but I want to eliminate my stock ignition as a possible problem when revving, though I think I'm actually fuel-limited at this point.
MSD 6AL boxes are over $200 new. Don't bother with a 6AL unless you have a manual though. If you have an auto, go with a 6A. Its the same thing, but the -L model gives you a rev limiter.
I'm actually looking into the Crane Hi-6 model instead of the MSD unit this time. I've heard nothing bad about the Crane so far and its a lot cheaper.

I have an auto and use a 6AL. It all depends on if you want to replace your motor along with that broken driveline/axle.

response: Actually SummitRacing.com sells the Crane box with a coil that's a direct plug-in for $179. I'm going to get myself one soon as I can cough the dough. The kit is actually called the Crane Hi-6S and it includes a built in rev limiter that doesn't use chips like the MSD boxes. The Crane uses rotary dials so that means you can be more exact on what redline you want.

Many manufacturers put Multi-strike ignition into the cars computer from the factory. It helps with HC emissions and of course with idle.
Some of the Fords I looked at fire the plug 2-3 times each compression stroke up to about 1800 RPM and I have a waveform of a BMW that fired the plug 9 times at idle

I run a 6A on mine and one thing I really like about it is my ability to run in "limp mode" when I mess up a chip or something goes wrong.
My fuel pressure is higher than stock and equates to about 26# injectors rather than 22# and when limp used to kick in with the stock ignition, the plugs would foul almost instantly. The multiple sparks helped out alot at low rpm to keep it from doing that. Haven't had to pull the plugs since installing it.
Just thought I'd share that.

that's what I was talking about. I was going to get a crane hi-6s along with the remote coil. For us guyz it's like $179.99 and it's a direct plug in installation
