TPI head upgrade

I have a tpi 305 with a lot of bolt ons and want to get more serious. I am wanting to upgrade the heads and am thinking about using a set of corvette aluminum heads with casting #10088113. Will these heads work with my engine or will it be overkill for a 305. Also i will be going with a compcam with specs of 212 - 218. Any opinions or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully someone else will chime in, but a few years ago (like 5 years ago) when I was looking at a 305 build up the corvette heads were highly recommended because htey are cheap and have a great flow pattern for the 305. Maybe there's something better out there now, and someone else will have to shed light on the casting numbers. Good luck

One advantage of those particular heads on a 305 is the fact that the chambers are only 58cc's, and the obvious advantage of them being aluminum. The only problem you'd have to work around is that they don't have the exhaust crossover passage for egr, but there's alot of posts on here on how to rig it up if you want to retain egr function.

Not educated about egr.

I am a novice mechanic and only learn about stuff like this when it comes up. What is the egr? What does it do, and what would happen if i ran these heads without it like was said would happen? Bring on all opinions! Thanks.

I did some reading up the egr and my car is already emissions illegal. I run a dealer tag on it so i don't need to worry about passing emissions. Is that all i need to worry about? If it won't hurt performance, then i won't care about the egr.

I asked this same question a few months ago. See the following thread:

EGR = exhaust gas recirculation...basically it recirculates some of the exhaust if I remember right...basically tries to burn soem of the stuff that didn't burn the first time through...

yeah those heads arent bad at all.. a nice port job on those heads were be ALOT better.

another option is the new trick flow heads with a 175cc intake runner. they flow well and smaller port size is nice for smaller small blocks.

if u take off EGR, you'll throw a code on the check engine light. need to burn a chip to compensate for not having egr. but i dont think it will hurt performance too much.

I am currently running these heads. I just got back from Milan this afternoon. My launching techniques need quite a bit of work (yuky 2.1 60 ft) but my car went a 13.70 @ 100.5mph. My mods are in my sig. Once I learn to launch with my slicks the car should go around a 13.50 with a 1.8 60ft time. pretty respectable I think.

EGR is not an issue for most of us that run these heads. There is a temp sensor at the base of the EGR valve. Due to the fact that these heads do not have an exhaust crossover, the temp sensor never gets hot enough for the ECM to activate EGR function. So basically I just bolted these heads on and the EGR issue takes care of itself.

Also do a serch for my posts and Willie's. He used to run these heads and gave me some pointers a while back when I put them on. These heads are a great add on for a 305.

You're doing that with a TPI 305?

Is this a 5 speed car do you have major intake work done? Or just a port/polish to the factory intake setup?

6SpeedTA95,

This car has a tremec TKO-600 5speed, it used to be an automatic car though. The plenum and base are simply smoothed and gasket matched, the runners are untouched. The intake and heads are gasket matched, the intake ports of the heads are smoothed but not reshaped in any way, the chambers and exhaust ports are polished. I did all the port work myself with a standard abrasives head porting kit. The headers and exhaust are Edelbrock and this car retains it's stock 3.23 gears which are less than ideal for drag racing but I am keeping them because I frequently autocross the car. The rest of the mods are in the sig, I have not lightened this car in any way and it still has the stock injectors, throttle body, etc. For more on 305 performance do a search on Willie, Tim Burgess, mw66nova, TunedPort335, and myself.

Once I learn to launch my car I will be down with TunedPort335 with his 13.4, mw66nova has a carb'd 305 with an automatic that is probably in the high 12s by now. Tim Burgess is in the high 12s as well.
