Problem with my car
Hey guys I have an 89 Iroc with a 350 engine and had a few questions.
Sometimes when I turn it on the engines sounds like it has asthma. It breathes for a while then wants to turn off. I accelerate it for a while and the RPM stops jumping and stays stable and its ready to go. On some occasions it has turned off on me and Im scared that something is wrong with the engine.
Another one of my problems is the car sometimes gives this strong gasoline smell and when I turn it off I hear this pssssssssssssss sound near the driver's rear tire.
If all is good with my engine I was wondering if you guys can also help me on upgrading my car. The car is in great shape inside and out except some chips in the front bumber and little paint tears where I have hit parking lumps (i think thats what they are). I wanted to make my car into something that can be feared by 4th gens. I dont wanna get a new engine because im going to buy a 4th gen later on, so I just want to make this one the best it can be. As far as the engine goes I might have a $1200 limit come this May. I also want to know if a ghost flame job on the front nose going to the doors would look good on a burgundy Iroc. The reason im considering this is because the car isnt show quality anymore because of my dumb driving that got chips and small scuffs on the nose. So I thought that if I get a ghost flame paint job it would cover that up and itll look better. If you have any Ideas dont hesitate to post. Im really sorry to post but I really needed help thanks!

That hissing noise is more than likely your fuel pump. As for the flame on a f-body, you ashame us all, especially burgandy. Go through your fuel system, that is probably the majority of your problems. Have a shop flush your fuel system. And change oil often. Start with the fuel, check the pressure, thats the basic idea, then let me know what you have and we can make this car work.

mines gonna beat it though, I'll even be nice and start with 98 ls1 Trans Am, and then move to the 85 Trans Am. That a good hint. And check your fuel psi. Determining if its fuel or spark is the first step.

I will admit ghost flames may look cool but they also cost money, and you get what you pay for you pay cheap your car will look real cheap, you pay high your car takes a high respect. Is the rest of your cr in prestigious shape to where the flames will look and stay brand new for years? Think it over I vote to go fast and like android said its your choice if youd rather roll down the quarter looking better than the guy that just beat you or to beat the guy, like you said $1200 by may, thats not terribly much money. Ghaost flamse could cost from $400 dollars and up.

Psssssh near the rear tire tells me exactly what area to look at.
Its in the fuel system but not for the reasons mentioned so far.
Your system is a vapor recovery type and something is worng with that part of it. Between the sound and the stumbling car it really points to the pump being overtaxed. If this has been going on for any length of time I would prolly recommend replacing the pump as well.
Either your fuel tank vent valve is not letting in air to displace the fuel consumed(it is a one way air in only valve) or the canister purge is not working properly and venting the collected vapors to the engine casuing pressure to rise in the tank.
Look here before going anywhere else. If the pressure in your tank rises(should be little, it is a sealed type system afterall) your pump has to work harder, just as it does if your fuel system experiences a vaccum(which it will do if the fuel tank vent valve does not let fresh air in to displace fule used it actually will suck the tank in)
Start here and there is more info and part numbers available thru searching under posts by myself and Vader on this subject.

not to bad
the fuel pump should be relatively inexspensive, edlebrock even makes a nice in tank for a reasonable price if the engine is modded. i agree with the fresh air recovery bad being bad, i heard the hssssing sound for a while on my car, then it started making a big thunk sound where it was drawing in metal after long drives, i would def start there
