Hi all, this is my first, so please excuse me if I have asked a question that has been asked many times before or if it seems stuiped to ask.

Does the 86 Trans Am have an in tank fuel pump?

I have a 5L 1986 Trans am and are wanting to clean up some of the mess left behind from the last owner. He has installed a Holly Stealth Ram and several fuel pumps along with a surge tank, under the car to get the high pressure required. I wanted to just install one quality pump about 12" lower than the tank it self. I'm unsure if I have to keep the surge tank and if these had an in tank pump.

If it came with factory fuel injection, it has an intank pump, but an inline pump is a common mod for these cars.

 

Mine does, but it's TPI. IIRC, even some of the later model carbed engines had a pump in the tank.

my 86 Trans Am 5 Speed with Quadrajet 4bbl didn't have an intank pump.

 

My 87 Firebird Trans Am 305 with 4 barrel carb has an electric fuel pump in the tank and a mechanical fuel pump on the engine, I am the original owner bought it new that is how it came from the factory

 

Does the electric one make a significant whining/humming noise when you return the key on?
Is there a way to just go to a “regular” pump for a 5L 305 4 barrel carb? I’m a new owner to an 86 and can’t figure out if this whine is a good thing or bad thing now that it’s quieter on idle but noticeable as I’m driving - when I got the car it was just obnoxious
