Changing 1 pc. rear main seal since engine is out of car
Hi guys, I have a 305 TPI going into my 83 Firebird soon. It is a 100k mile 1987 engine from another car. It doesn't look like it had any excessive oil leakage, but is it going to be worth the hassle to replace the rear main while the engine is already pulled? I am used to the 2 piece rear mains that ALWAYS leak. Is the 1 pc indestructible and I'm wasting my time replacing it, or do they wear out and leak as well? Anything special I need to know about doing the 1 pc rear main? I've never replaced this newer style before.
I have seen the one-piece leak. Not near as common as the old 2-piece, but it happens. - Changing it is simple. Drop the pan, unbolt the seal/housing, tap the old one out, tap a new one in, re-assemble. - I highly recommend NOT getting the "teflon" supposed to be better, more expensive rear-seal. I've never had one of those actually seal.

I went ahead and replaced mine while I was taking the heads off with the motor out of the car. Its sure a lot easier to replace it now while its out then 10k miles down the road when it starts leaking.
