i think my MAF went bad
my car wont idle, i can hold it at about 1500rpm, but no lower than that. i was told to unhook the MAF and see what happened, and it ran, not well, but it ran. as soon as i hook it back up, the car dies. sooo, anyone know where i can get a new MAF cheap? the only place ive looked is TPIS and they want like 260 for a stock one and 300 for a modified one...which is wwwaaayyy outa my price range right now, thanks for any info.

DEFINATLY dont buy the one from autozone or advanced auto... if it cost around 160 or less its complete crap, ive gone through 3 cheap ones.. well not cheap but cheapest ones. i ordered one from jegs a while ago that was for the vette for about 300$ and this one has a warrenty. but all electronics ive had to deal with from any of those places where i thought i was getting a good deal ended up being crap. so id sugest spending the money, also have some one check the codes the car is showing it will tell you if thats the real problem.... and ive never seen one of these cars able to run with it unlpugged so thats kinda weird!

it hasnt been running for a few weeks, heres a link to the post describing it. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=343356
i didnt think the car would run without the MAF either...granted, it runs like crap, but it runs.
the only time it throws codes is when the car dies with the MAF hooked up, but when i try to pull the code the only thing i get is the no error code, which i think is code 12. all i know is im confused.

Before you go spending 200 bucks on a new maf, spend 25 for new maf power and burn relays and see if that solves the problem.

Can't replace the relays with a bosch style?
Cost you like 20 bucks total to re-do all the relays to a cube style relay from Bosch.
http://www.partsexpress.com/ has excellent prices, and very quick shipping

Sinking money into something that's currently working is annoying- although yes, it may die in the future.

My MAF went out on my 86 TA. It also ran with the MAF disconnected, as you say, not well, but it was enough to get to work and back a while until I got a used MAF off ebay.

My friend and I were making some modifications to my air box and unplugged the MAF- when we reassembled it we forgot to plug it in. When I started the car, it died right away. The second time, it ran but through a Check Engine light. Car seemed to run fine without the MAF for the short time that I had it out. MAFs come on ebay occasionally, but you might be better off buying a new one if you have too.

i got one today
its one with the computer chip thing in it rather than the wire, im told it will actually flow better than one with a wire. if thats true or not i dunno, but i got one for $50 and the guys gonna data log the car for me next weekend. so now i can set my timing and fuel pressure just right.

If you can get the car idling with your bad? MAF. Tap on the housing with a screwdriver handle or similar. If it stalls you got a bad MAF..
IMHO the best solution is to borrow a friends MAF since it's an expensive part to take a stab at..
