Code 42 Ecm Problems...???
Hi Everyone,
I have an 88 formula 5.0 5 speed. It was bucking like crazy and would stall at an idle. I gave it a tune up and nothing. I noticed that after a while the ecm quit on me. The check engine light would no longer come on and the car would not start. I replaced the ecm and the car lit right up. It lit the check engine light. I checked the code and it was a code 42. I replaced the spark timing module and the car immediately ran great. No stalling sputtering or anything. I took the car for a ride and was very pleased at the way it ran. When I came back I shut the car off and went inside. I went out to start the car and again the check engine light would not come on. This ecm is dead now too. The fuse is ok. Any ideas???

the ECM is it new or reman? (if its a reman I would still look at the ECM)
also, is the chip good?

well i did buy a reman. What I don't get is that it ran perfect! Then when I shut er down it was done. Its kind of strange that it did exactly what the original one did?? Would a knock sensor have anything to do with it?

the knock senser can pull timeing out, but I dont know if it will pull that much to make it not run?
I changed my ECM because my car would start and die, put in a reman ECM and the SES light would flicker, then just stay on, turns out the new one I got was bad. take a look @ TPIparts.net if you want to look at a brand new ECM.
good luck,
joe
