cam question

I am looking to upgrade the cam in the 305 tpi engine I am building. The engine is a .60 over 305 (14010201 casting) with stock heads (14014416 casting 1.84"/1.5" valves, 58cc chambers). I will be running a 700r4 trans and 2.77 stock gears. The TPI setup is a stock 86 IROC setup. I may put a better prom in it soon also. I am looking for a street car that will perform better than stock at the track. What would you TPI gurus recommend, other than chunking the 305 and building a 350 . Thanks in advance for your help.

Jason

Recommend? Anything except the factory "LA" cam (peanut cam) that came with the 305. By the cast numbers you listed, I'll presume you're staying with a flat tappet cam and lifters. Comp Cams 260AH-14 works with the 305 and is emissions legal, while the 268AH-14 will work with the 305 but is not CARB rated. It can still meet emission requirements with proper tuning, and would be just about all the lift you would want on unaltered '416 heads.

Car: projects.......
note: when Vader(or anyone for that matter) says proper tuning, that means a custom tune.
I noticed you said "better prom". That only applies to custom burns. The off-the-shelf units won't gain you anything. - as for the cam, I agree with Vader. (the man is a TPI genius....)

Vader, I too am interested in upgrading my cam in my 86 305 tpi, but nothing too extreme. Is the Comp Cams 260AH-14 ok to use with my stick prom. What do you mean by CARB rated?
