Ive used Valvoline for over 10 years. In pretty much everything I own. I just put 20w50 full synthetic in my Trans Am. My car seems to like it alot.

I've used the Valvoline Synthetic High Mileage in my car, when I had my old TPI in it. Worked good I got better oil pressure.

Theres only a handful of true "synthetic oil" out there.

Mobil 1, Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple.

The rest are just more higly refined dino oil.

Just something to be aware of when paying for overpriced suposedly synthetic stuff.

Correct. Search for "Group 3 synthetic" and "group 4 synthetic" and you'll see what the differences truly are.

Just because the bottle reads "synthetic" and you think you're using, synthetic, you might not actually be using synthetic. The molecules of Group 3 OILs are not synthesized from other molecules, but merely highly refined. We USED TO call that "good oil" instead of "synthetic" lubricant. Molecules of a true synthetic are created from the polymerization of ethylene gas. The base products were never near a crude oil field. "Phony synthetic" or Group 3 is made from additional hydro-cracking of refined crude oil base stocks. That's a huge difference when the oil goes into service and starts to heat, oxidize, and break down the long molecules more readily than a true synthetic.

If it has olefin base made by Ethyl, Royal Dutch Shell, Exxon/Mobil, Conoco/Phillips, of some imports (not likely) it might be real synthetic. Otherwise, calling it "synthetic" is like calling a Hyundai a "sports" car.

Any of the true synthetics should be at the top of the list. As for what's best, that depends on what you use for criteria.

I use Royal Purple in my GTA for all the fluids. The reason why I use it?? Well simply because I saw it on HorsePowerTV one day, they gained 8.5rwhp in a 200? SS by simply changing all the fluids to RP. SOLD!!

I was a manager at Valvoline back in the day. We took all the classes and went to all the tech schools. When you learn about it, you learn to trust it. Nothing goes in my car but Valvoline Synthetic. 10W40 in my Jeep, 20W50 in my Trans Am. When you learn 1st hand how a company stands behind there product....Thats all I needed to hear.

If you believe everything you see on TV.....I've got a bridge out here in Calfornia I'll sell you...REEEAAALLL cheap.

I wonder how many times they had to test it to get the higher reading. And were they testing it with the hood closed?

im acutally thinking about synthetic soon for my car. But to add to the topic of synthetics, is it true that its "thinner", hence why on older motors it goes right through the seals?

I think my valve seals are kinda busted on my new 355...will switching to synthetic hurt anything or help?

(not trying to thread jack)

2006 Corvette ZR-1 ships new with Mobil 1. If its good enough for that car it's good enough for my 87 TA. I have heard amsoil & royal purple are good too. If you are just driving on the street save some money & go Mobil 1.

Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil

I found this link very informative:
Synthetic Oil Life Study

I used Mobil 1 in a 4 cylinder Pontiac Grand Am and the engine was still getting the same gas mileage at 212,000. To date it is still on the road at a hefty 259,000. I have also seen other testing where the Mobil 1 Synthetic outlasted all other oils. I also know that Acura, BMW, and Mercedes use Mobil 1 synthetic and only require an oil change every 10,000 miles.

Hope this helps!

I have been using Mobil One for over 10 years, if that tells you something.. I used it first in a chevy truck S-10 2.8,V-6 and it raised my idle speed 250 rpm's right off the bat.. I only changed my oil and filter every 15,000 miles... When I finally got rid of the service work truck it had over 280,000 miles and ran like it did when it had 40,000 miles on it, never did smoke, rattle or knock... Made a believer out of me, and I'm still using Mobil One in all of my vehicles. Also, I use mobil one's very best oil filter...

once you use synthetic you can switch back to regular oil without any problems. synthetic oil will not break stuff or really cause any problems.
thats for the guys above who asked. worst case thing that might happen is it might free some of the sludge already in your motor around the seals and cause it to leak alittle more to start. but generally synthetic oils are also better at swelling the seals back up to shape so give it some time and you should be leaking less oil then when you prolly first started

I use mobil 1 myself but the main reason for that is it is easy to grab. unlike amsoil or royal purple where I would have to order it I can go to just about any store and grab some mobil 1 synthetic.
