Setting Engine Timing Using Inductive Light Question
Setting Engine Timing Using Inductive Light Question
Hi everyone, quick question I want to adjust the timing on my z28. Engine label says 6 degrees before top dead center (BTDC). Ok so I started the car ran it a bit to get the temp right then parked the car disconnected the EDL while the car was running and then checked the timing. I am using an inductive light gun (with a dial) so I hooked it to the #1 plug and set the dial on the gun to 6 degrees. I then pointed it at the plate and it is showing up at 6 which means my timing is correct. Just wanted to make sure that is the correct way of using the timing gun.

According to what you've just described, you've got 12 degrees... 6 on the comb plus the 6 degrees on the gun.
When you're using a dial-back light, you set the dial on the light to the advance you want, and then line the balancer mark up to the zero mark on the comb.

Apeiron thank you for the reply.
Wow so my timing is advanced. I have been running the car like that for a few years...thats the last time I set the timing on the car. I can't believe I haven't felt any problems till now.
So to recap I have to set the dial on the gun to 6 degrees and then shot and make sure the it zeros on the comb.

Set the dial to 0 and turn the distributor until it's 6 on the comb, or set the dial to 6 and turn the distributor until it's 0 on the comb.
