Which side do you oil your panels? I don't think it matters because the oil penetrates the cotton gauze but thought I'd ask... just in case I'm wrong.

Oil whichever side is considered the outside. If you use spray oil let it sit 10 minutes. If you use bottle oil then 20 minutes.
Clean from the inside/out and oil from the outside/in.

Mike's directions effectively duplicate the instructions found on my "filter recharger" kit. Senior Member

For those of us with MAF, oil even more sparingly than they tell you to....
The more oil you throw on there, the less it flows, it plugs up faster, and
works less efficiently. Oil very, very lightly, a little goes a looooong way.
Mike does indeed have it right, BTW....
(I was a K&N dealer way, way back when they first hit teh scene...)

oil bad for MAF
Yep, clean inside out, oil outside in.
I have K&N's, but have heard that the oil can get the MAF oily and that leads to a slight decrease in performance. I have been thinking of cleaning the MAF with some throttle body cleaner to see if it makes a difference. There is a coating on the inside of my intake...Any one else heard of this?

Good article
Great article. I do have some residue on my MAP, so I will clean that off. I wonder where the oil residue would be coming from then. I am a fan of K&N filters. I felt more seat of the pants HP from a K&N in our Grand Cherokee than I did from a high flow muffler.

K&N also states that their filter efficiency is as good or better than paper or synthetic media's. I don't buy either for quite a few reasons.
That said, the MAFs that seem to have most of the trouble are NOT the hot wire MAFs. The hot wire MAFs such as (generally) ours on the V8s will burn off the contaminants if the system is working properly.
As for how I re-oiled mine, I didn't, I took it out and threw it in one of my parts piles next to a few other ones.
