$600 for new fuel pump!!!

Well I got my 89 Formy outta the shop the otherday. It was 600 altogether! This is what my bill looked like....

Labor-Diagnosis $37.50
Labor-to replace fuel pump $360,,, they charge $60 per hour
34.99 for the fuel filter

Parts- Fuel pump, part # P74006 $118.75
Parts- Fuel pump wiring harness $13.73
Parts- Fuel pump stainer....... 8.97

I think I got ripped a new one on that total!!!
Not ta mention theres something obnoxious rattling around now near the muffler. And it doesnt seem to wanna idle during a cold start. The car ran better before. Time to bring her back to the boneheads at the shop and have them look it over again! What would You guys do? I dont have any space or tools to work on my own car right now. I hate bringin my car to shops I dont know! But I had no options and got straight stiffed on the bill!

make sure that something else doesn't break while in the shop and they will tell you they have to fix it.... charge you more.... that fuel filter should have costed no more than 15 dollars.... fuel pump about 40-60 dollars and strainer 4 bucks and that wiring harness is a bull **** charge... it comes with the pump... i know this because i work in a parts store... ALWAYS BUY YOUR OWN PARTS!!!!! shops get a deal on the parts then charge out the *** for dumb crap like this.... don't know why but they do...... take a pic of your mileage before you bring it in.... some just drive your car around to do errands in...... 600 bucks for a new pump... i could have done it in an hour and charged ya 100 bucks....

I had my fuel pump replaced by the local GM dealer, it cost me bout $600. The GM fuel pump as I recall was about $115, the rest was mostly labor.

They have to pull the tank in order to replace the pump. It's a real PITA I hear.

Roachjuice you must be the fastest mechanic in the world, one hour? And for $100? How much would you charge for just washing my car?

thats actually cheap for labor considering that most shops will go by book time which i think is about 10 hours of labor since the whole rear end has to be reemoved in order to get the tank out

If i do recall i paid around $450 to have mine replaced five years ago, so $600 does not seem out of the ballpark.

everything looks about right for having it done at a shop except for the diagnostic charge, its low.
where i work at we charge $70.00 for a basic diagnostic check.

on the rattle & cold start problem, take it back.

this is for the people who scream & holler about what shops charge for the work they do, how many permits do you have to buy every year? how much does the lease where you do your work at run you a month?
how much does it cost you to run your air compressor? how much do you spend on repair manuals every year? what about shop equipment? how often do you have to up date your scanners?

cutting a hole in the body to replace the fuel pump is not the way most shops will do it, its not the way a professional auto mechanic does things. yes, there have been a few people here on this site who have done it & did a good job the way they did it,.. but there are a lot of others who did it & did a **** poor job on it.

Exact same thing I did. I'm so glad I have the tools and the knowledge to do it myself! To bust a few myths here, you don't have to completely remove the rearend, and cutting an access hole is just plain retarded. I've changed mine out a couple of times, and it usually takes about 3-4 hours working at a nice easy pace. If you're able to do it yourself, you end up with a top of the line Walbro pump for the same amount of money that the shop charges you for the so-so GM pump alone, let alone the outrageous labor costs. I realize not everyone has the time or the space to do their own, but I absolutely cringe whenever I hear how much they have to pay a shop to do it for them!
