Pics of my ported stock base

I finally got it finished, now I just need to wrestle off the stuck star bolts and we'll see how she responds. I spent about 4 hours on this intake, the first round I used grease on a double cut 6in carbide bur to remove a TON of metal. The area about 1in inside of the port where it goes into the head is completely silly from the factory. Instead of coming in like this [ ] It has a ridge at the bottom like this [ /]. I removed that on all 8 ports and recontoured the floor for smooth flow. I spent time opening up the passage in the mid section, and blending in the round entries. I didn't hog out the intake because at the moment I have stock runners so I didn't see a point in making it open up to prior to entering the head, but this intake was FULL of casting flange. It had all kinds of rough spots and raised edges in it. Finally I finished the entire intake with 80 grit bead blast material. I spent around an hour flowing bead blast in the direction of air flow and it completely smoothed out the wall where the air hits inside the runner passages. I left it finished somewhat rough because I spray a wet shot through my intake, if I had a direct port or wasn't using nitrous I would've finished it up with some super fine bead and made it shine like chrome throughout.

I noticed a bump in the pictures I didn't catch when I was just looking at it, It's smaller than it looks in the pics. I don't have access to a dyno but I'll post up some drag strip times if I can make it one last time this season. The car did a 13.8 with an 8.9 in the 8th, then at Bean Blossom 8th mile track it did an 8.7, this is all on the stock crap intake that actually looks worse than the one I started with on the port job. The mods I've been doing lately haven't bumped me up much so this has to be the bottle neck (crosses fingers hopes it's not the heads) I'll keep everyone posted.

The intake is one of the biggest bottlenecks overall. What have you done to the upper plenum, as there is some work to be done there. Beleive it or not, you can actually siamese the stock runners about 1/4" deep (into the flange) as well as the plenum itself. Opening the EGR walls, and the siamese will really let her breathe more.

The heads however, what yeah were the heads from and what size motor? It says you have an LB2 motor, do you mean LB9 (305TPI)? The cams in the A4 87 LB9s sucked that year, that could be one contributing factor. The heads too...eh, not the greatest flowing in the world. What time would you run without the spray? Sub 14's are great, N/A, but with the juice, I'd say you are running a high 14 N/A. 305s definately have the potential for better.

P.S., keep an eye on that 9 bolt, easy on the launches.

The pictures look good. I am interested in seeing pictures of a un-ported stock intake, anyone got a link? As I have never seen one. As asked up top, do you have a 305? You suppose to siemese the runner just by the plenum or at both ends? -Nick.

My motor is the L98 that came in the Camaro's, it's a 350 with iron heads. The 1987 heads are odd ones, they don't have guide plates or self aligning rockers they just have a little oval shaped groove in the heads. This motor had 140,000 miles on it when I took it out of the junkyard and I've put around 60,000 on it (I lost track anymore I just say it's got 200,000 plus miles). I run consistant 12.6's on a 150 shot and have done a 12.5. The car constantly puts down 14.0, 14.1's and lately has been breaking into the 13's with a 13.9 run and a 13.8 run. It has a siamesed plenum with siamesed runners not quite 1/4in in but they're smoothed out and radiused for better flow, long tubes with duals, stiffer valve springs (cheapo .550 lift ones), and a few other supporting bolt ons, plus some suspension work with ET Streets putting it all to the ground. The cam in my motor is smaller than the other 350 TPI cams, but I installed 1.6 ratio roller rockers to compensate for that some. As for the stock base pictures I will actually post up quite a few of them when I get the stock one off my car with direct comparison pictures of the new ported base. This base is worked quite a bit, I couldn't believe how inconsistant the runners were from the factory.

Got the old intake off tonight, it was ROUGH; we had to completely grind the head off of a torx bit and the stud is still stuck in the head. Here're the pics of the stock intake, notice the step I was talking about where it actually goes [ /] you can see it pretty well in the pic. The runners are just nasty inside from the factory. This one's actually a little cleaner than the others I've seen because of my wet shot but none the less, its' disgusting.

Now for the next big bottle neck, the heads, here's pics of the stock 87 intake runner.

The verdicts in; last day of the season and she pulled off 2 13.5's and a 13.6 first run of the day, the car feels insanely better cruising at 60mph and overall runs better. I ported this lower, and also ported the stock air box; both VERY worthwhile mods.

Yes, a very nice improvement. Going from a 13.8 to a 13.5 is like a 30hp pickup. Very good.

I have the same job done to my heads and base. Right now, I'm running LB9 heads on my 355 (I know!) and when I had those smoothed out/ported, I had the intake base matched. Only comparison I have is my old crappy running 305 to my new 355 so there isn't much of a comparison at all, but I love the power!

Next year my engine is getting a Vortec setup (heads and base) along with my AS&M runners.

I modded the air box this time out, heated it and raised the narrowest point in the box, removed the ridge on the bottom, heated the sides and moved them back/ground them down. I have Hedman long tubes with dual classic chambered mufflers, an H pipe, MSD box, siamesed base and runner entries, and I hammered the dents out of my runners using a closed end wrench. One of the 13.5's was at 97mph and the other was at 100, my friend made the 100mph run and he's about 80 pounds lighter than me. The time slips are posted up in the "post your TPI quarter times or eighths" thread, just search for my posts it should be close to the top.
