if you have a 84 with TPI, it was added to the car. TPI came out for thirdgens in 85. the 84s had crossfire injection.

if you do have TPI, does it have a MAF or is it a speed density system?
speed density has the air temp sensor on the bottom of the plenum back near the distributor.
i think the MAF cars had the air temp sensor in the MAF sensor, but i could be wrong on that.

now that you mention it he did say it was added. im not sure if it is MAF or speed density, im pretty sure it has the mass air flow sensor on the butterfly part of the intake. im not quite sure how to tell, i just got the car like 5 hours ago. thanks for the help.

if you have a MAF, it will look like the pix i posted. if you dont see the sensor like this one it is SD. either way the plug your talking about is the air temp sencor. it needs to be pluged in.

Maf for sure have the air temp senser under the plenum, I'm not familar with speed density though. Also have you scanned for codes yet it may tell you the problem.

i would think that it would give you a code. if he put the motor in than he put the tpi computer in, so yea you need it. does it run good now?

of course if he didnt wire it right you might not get a code.

no it runs like crap, it doesent seem to be running on all cyls. he said the motor is new and all the computer for the TPI was new. before i checkd anything the timing seems right but i could be wrong, 2 of the spark plug wires were wrong that helped a little but not much. it bearly stays running, im not sure if it was the connector not plugged in, but it is a pain in the butt to try and plug in. like i said i just got the car today and im tryin to work out the bugs.

Usually if theres a code the engine light will come on, but not always. Being that this person put the engine in I would call him with a list of questions to find out as much as you can about your new ride.

well sounds like thats just one of your problems. one step at a time.
you deffently need to get it on the right timing though. after that just ask and we will try to answer.
