Need help with another cam question
I just recently purchased a TPIS ZZX cam from someone on this board. I really didn't research the cam that much but now I'm thinking of selling it or trading for another one. I have a '91 350 TPI with stock heads,1.6 RR, stock bottem end, TPIS big mouth intake, TPIS runners, ported plenum, headers, dual 3 in. exchaust to 2 flows, 700r with2500 stall(this might change to a T-56 soon), and 3.27 posi.
So I thing the ZZX cam is to damn big for what I have. I want to keep stock heads and I've been told that the ZZX cam would be recommended to be run on a motor with 11:1 or higher ratio. I really want to keep the stock look with my stock heads so I was now looking into some LPE, COMPS, LT4 hot cam, or some other TPIS cam. I've been looking and searching and like the LPE cams alot. I did a search on this board and saw that the LPE 219 cam would not really work with my combo. Is that true? I was also looking at the LPE 211 or 216, but I then found a thread with the LT4 hot cam(find some good info on this cam) and then the comps XFI cams. That's where all the confusion came in. My head hurts now
. Anyways, I'm either going to sell or trade my cam for one of these options so I really need your help. I know about the programming that is needed and I know about my heads being the bottle neck of the motor so I please just give me your advise on what cam to get with my setup. At most I might just get my heads ported and polished and of course have them worked on to fit the cam I get
I'm kind of leaning towards LPE or LT4
LPE, LT4, XFI, TPIS. What do you think?

A good port and polish job can't really make up for a poorly designed head. It will help but you can only get so much.
I think you are on the right track though... all parts in the engine "system" need to be somewhat matched. A huge cam by itself will probably be disapointing. Big cams give up low end torque for high end hp (lots of overlap). So if the rest of the system is designed for low to mid power, a big cam will produce neither.

Read through this post:

...it starts innocently enough, but a few of us hijacked it and turned a simple question into a really neat "theoretical" TPI cam discussion.
....and for the record, except for your modified TPI intake, we have VERY similar set-ups. Your heads are really killin' flow. Can I ask why you don't want to get new heads? I know the reason I'm still runnin' stockers is that I'm planning a rebuild, and for now the budget is directed elsewhere.
...I'm currently running the ZZ4 cam and for what my motor is, I LOVE it. Your modified intake could probably handle bigger, and your dual 3" exhause certainly can handle more than the ZZ4, but again, the heads are the bottleneck. Interesting dilemma. Not sure I can answer it for ya

well first I don't have the money right now for the heads. second the motor is old but in very good shape. eventually it will be rebuilt. I guess I want to get the most out of the stock bottom and heads. just want to see what it can do
