smog pump

When i put on my headers and new exhaust i removed all the smog stuff but i left the smog pump because the belt was new but now my smog pump has a really loud knocking noise and i was wondering if my knock sensor is pulling out timing because of it and does anyone know the serial number of the belt needed to put on once i remove the smog pump but keep the a/c?thanx

Once your car goes into closed loop, the smog pump ceases to function. It only operates in open loop. I took mine off my 94' z28 and went to emissions and passed. Its also off my IROC too. It cleans up the engine bay and is a little less weight as well.

The belt is a Dayco 968K6. It is 98.6 inch belt. I removed my pump last weekend and this belt fit perfectly.

I was refering more to the loud knocking noise that its making do to the fact that the bearings are going out and the knock sensor is hearing it and pulling out timing...............

Its still gonna pump air even though you took everything off. You better off pulling it off and getting one of those air pump delete puleys that allow you to use the stock belt.

As I understand it, knock sensors dont hear knock like human ears do, they work on harmonics.

Knock sensors detect harmonics inside the block that are beyond the range of human hearing.

Your not going to know if its pulling out timing unitl you hook it up to some sort of scan tool and check to see what the knock sensor is doing.

i agree but anything that makes a loud knocking noise will produce vibrations that the ks should pick up

Only if its in the harmonic frequency range, again, as I understand it.

You couldnt bang on the side of the block with a wrench and expect the knock sensor to think its knocking, because its a different frequency range than what the knock sensor is made to detect.

Just like the LS1 specific high ratio rockers that won't set off the KS.
ws6gta89, what's stopping you from by-passing the smog pump all together? I mean my belt was only like $27 or something. Could be sneaky and return the belt in exchange for the delete size, lol.
