Porting Question

Okay fellas, I am going to tear off my intake this weekend to replace a manifold gasket. Im leaking coolant into my #1 cylinder. So I dont really have a choice, its comming off this weekend no matter what. I was going to wait until I got a HSR but oh well.

Well this little event gives me the opportunity to port some of this stuff. Soooo I was going to port the boxes in the plenum and siamese the plenum and intake runners. I was also going to port and polish the intake manifold. But my question is, is this way too much work for a weekend? I do have some buddies to help take off and re-install but I dont trust anyone but numero uno to do the porting. Ive never ported on cars before but I am a jeweler so I figure i'll pick it up.

Also what kind of gains will I get from this? Im high altitude as it is and my TPI falls down at 4000 flat. Will this help me take it to redline? And what kind of #s will I gain if any? Then finally anyone have any pics of porting the base? I saw the Madmax thing but I dont think I can go that far lmao...or can I? Seriously can I?

AS for the time it will take, make sure you have a lot of bits and such so you don't have to go make any parts runs then don't sleep and you should be ok. It might be tough. Are you using a die grinder or a dremel?

I have a die grinder with a 100 gallon compressor. BTW What kind of bits might I use and where do I get them locally.

That's a lot of porting. If you've never done it before then you want to take your time so plan for more time.

Turned in my cable modem today so I'm not sure if it will be up by the time you read this, but check out my porting info, including details on tools. If you can afford to be without it a bit longer, I'd definitely buck up and port it. http://triodes.home.mchsi.com/engine/v8astro3.html

Porting takes time. LOTS OF TIME!! You need to prep well. Make a template froman old gasket or something so you can get all the opening the same. You will need a 1/4" double cut carbide burr to be efficient at all. Sanding bits will have little effect. Grinding bits will gum up with aluminum after awhile. You will need some sort of a lubricant to keep the aluminum from clogging the burr teeth. It's good you have a large compressor cause you will need it. I have been porting mine on and off all winter. I siamesed the plenum at the runners and made the TB opening 58mm. I also smoothed out all the entrances and exits. I also opened up the throats of the manifold runners. I gasket matched everything as well. I did not siamese the runners cause it didn't seem like a good idea. I just radiused the ports together with a soft curve.
I could go on forever explaining it all. It's alot of concentration and efffort to get it right.
Here is some of the stuff I used:
Double cut carbide cylinder shaped burr with balled end $20 each
Double cut carbide tree shaped burr $18 each
80 and 120 grit 1" small drum flap sander $4
80 and 120 grit 2" med drum flap sander $4
If your siameseing you'll need a cutter to join the two ports

I've tried a couple different things but this seems to be the easiest and fastest.

Well hope this helps.
