ATTENTION: ALL TPI WIZARDS LETS SEE WHO CAN GET THIS ONE.

OK its an 88 GTA check my sig for mods but here are the simptoms. Simply put, its flooding the s@#t out of the cylinders. I feel that I have done everything humanly possible to fix it but no dice. All I keep getting is a code 33. I installed a new MAF checked all the wiring but it still wont idle or run correctly. I have also replaced the CTS,O2S,ECM,distributer,wires,3 sets of plugs, and changed the oil 3 times because of excess fuel in it. My injectors went in fine into the intake and I dont feel they are binding. My timing is at 8 BTC and fuel pressure is at 42psi with the vacuum line conected. When I change the plugs it starts right up and sounds good for about 1 minute the begins to missfire. Lets see who gets it right.

Are you using an FMU? Do you have a custom chip?

I am using an FMU but the problem is at all RPM levels even when the FMU is inactive at idle. I dont have a custom chip but all my mods were based on running a stock PROM. I know I will greatly benefit from a custom chip but at this time i havent ordered one.

ck the fuel pres.regulator see if raw fuel is being pulled into the vac line into intake.its possible the diapham has a hole in it.............. ck the TPS with a scanner.....remember those injectors are turned on by a ground in the ECM ....ck to be sure the two ground wires(one for each side of injectors)is not grounded anywhere....i doubt the cold start injector sticking open could dump enough fuel to cause this....i hope this helps

Its your injectors binding and staying open. This is a very common flaw of edelbrock Bases. Put a washer under each fuel rail bolt so the injectors arnt too tight in the bore.

take a fuel press gauge and see how fast those injectors leak down at shut down...and if its leakin ...where the fuel is going ..i'm not familar with the edelbrock base ie tight injectors in the bores...but if thats it you should be able to ck it quickly with a gauge...

Transformer i think MKcos is referring to as you tighten down the four fuel rail bolts the main body of the fuel rail holding the injectors forces the injectors too far into the intake crushing them ...causing them to bind...he wants you to put the washer under the fuel rail to space the rail up farther...thus reliefing the pressure

TFMR, have you by the by swapped out the two MAF relays? Also does the rich condition happen all the time or only at idle - off idle? What about WOT?

My friend and his friend had the SAME Problem and the washers fixed it. I bought the Edel Base too and when I put it on I am just going to put the washers there too just in case.

i am one of the 2 people mkos1980 is talkin about.. first i would hook up a fuel pressure gauge and turn the key, the pressure should go up and stay at whatever psi you set your afpr too.. IF IT DOESNT then your injectors are grounding out becasue of the Edelbrock intake.. put washers under the fuel rail where it gets bolted down. Funny thing is i too have a code 33..??! read this---> http://www.nethirdgen.org/ubb/Forum11/HTML/000286.html

If all else fails, change your temperature sensor. My firebird's temp sensor went south, and it would flood the **** out of the car and wouldn't start.

I'm about 99% sure that it is your cold-start injector. The reason for that is I had this exact same problem happen to me about two years ago. I had the runners off, and when I put the CS injector back in I cut the o-ring some how. That one injector was dumping enough fuel into the cylinders that a few of the plugs couldn't even fire because there was so much fuel in the cylinder. It took me forever to figure out what it was when it happened to me.

If the injectors are stuck or leaking it should be dieseling like a sob when you shut it off. The maf relays might be a good place to look. Or if the car is getting false air, But i think that will make it run lean. Oh well wish my car would run rich. If you get fed up with it can I have dibs on the procharger?

Oh and 42 psi is high with the vacuum hooked up especially with a fmu. I was running 55psi for only a little while and it wasted 2 of my injectors. They started leaking bad.

Thanks for all the help till now guys. I havent done the washer because I still didnt have a clear understandidng of what "binding" was. But I get it know. What I did do was check the sound of the injector pulse. All but the 2 front drivers side injectors sounded fine. Those 2 have a low deep clicking tone while the others have the normal light tapping sound. Injector binding seems to be the culprit but we will find out tomorrow. Ill keep you up to date on my progress. Until then if anyone has any more suggestions please feel free to post them.

ok... its easy to swap relays, expensive sensors, check fuel pressure, leakdown etc.....But if your getting code 33,the mystery in most cases is an intermittant 5 pin weatherpack connector that connects to the maf. Specifically, the digital or analog ground. A new connector from GM will only cost $14. To test, use a DVM/Continuity tester: Unplug MAF, probe front female pin on plug, then go back a few inches behind plug and pierce wire to see continuity(do this for each pin). With test probes firmly attatched, wiggle connector and see if continuity is lost. Any suspiscions, change the plug.. warning, the wires on new plug are all white so make sure the wires go to the proper pin(reference old plug). Everyone is so quick to throw parts and money and unnecessary diagnostics at code 33 without understanding what sets it.Invest in a chiltons or helms service manual where code 33/and what sets it is explained.A bad regulator or injector/fuel system won't throw a code 33. PS ... Also check the harness @ the MAF relay in the same manner. I hope this info helps you or someone who reads it. This can be frustrating.
