TPI GASKETS and egr valve

hey everyone , I have to replace my egr valve on my 305 TPI , as we all know we have to take the plenum off to get to .... , havent donethis before was just wondering when i take the plenum off , im not planning on taking the runners off, just unbolt them from the plenum, do you just use gasket or do i use silicon with them , pretty sure its just gasket , i just want to double check. thanks all

When I replaced my EGR valve, the new one came with a gasket. It definitely wasn't a paper gasket either, some sort of metal or graphite in it...

I think he is referring to the plenum-runner gaskets... There is a single gasket (paper) between the runner and the plenum - one on each side. The easiest way to do this is to to unbolt the runner/plenum bolts (Torx t40 I think) and the three bolts that hold the throttle cable bracket, then unbolt the TB from the plenum - 4 long bolts - that way you don't have to disconnect anything on the throttle body. Make sure to note where each bolt came from so they go back in the proper spot. There are 3 vacuum lines (if I remember correctly) - two on the back/bottom of the plenum on the right (passenger) side (1 for the fuel pump relay and 1 for the EGR), and there will be a big one on the left/rear side for the brakes. Also, there is the electircal wire for the MAT on the bottom of the plenum.

If you're careful you can simply slide the plenum up and out without damaging the gaskets. Once you have replaced the EGR just reverse the procedure. Don't forget to connect the MAT wire!! Also, make sure to use some anti-seize compound on the bolts to prevent stripping (and make them easier to remove later), and torque bolts as per the manual (sorry, I don't have it with me )

Good luck, and let me know if you need any more help! (I have removed the plenum and runners a few times on the old GTA).

PS - all this info applies to my 87GTA with the 350TPI, but I know that the 87IROC 305TPI is identical.

Eric

I want to offer a different viewpoint. The Fel-Pro gasket kit comes with the plenum and runner gaskets, but not a throttle body gasket. Because of that, I leave the throttle body connected to the plenum. There really isn't that much to remove from the throttle body. A couple coolant lines and a couple plugs. I've had my plenum off so many times from dicking with my AFPR that I can have it off in under 10 minutes. You can not get one of the EGR valve bolts off without a little trickery unless you remove the driver side runner. I took a cheap 10mm wrench and bent it to a 45* angle and it did the trick. If you have crow's feet, that should work too.
