Speed limiter on '89 TPI?
Speed limiter on '89 TPI?
I've never had my car above 100mph on the road, but a couple weeks I had my rear end jacked up to work on the car. I wanted to see if it had a speed limiter, so I put it in 5th and let her rip...at 130mph it started shutting down...like it was kicking the fuel pump off or something...I didn't think this car would have a limiter from other posts I've read!?
I'm assuming the only way to get rid of it is by reprogramming or changing the PROM? I've got a Hypertech PROM right now.
Any info you guys could give would be appreciated. Thanks!

Can't specifically help you, but the stock corvette chips have a place for speed and rpm limiters, but they are set at ridiculous levels like 10000 rpm and 254 mph. Are the valves floating? TPI running out of air? Fuel pump dying?
My 89 TPI has a speed limiter too. However, it is hard to see exactly when it kicks in. It is past my 115mph speedo. Some people are going to get on here and tell you that TPI cars did not have limiters, but that is not the case. If you did not order Z-rated tires when you ordered your car, you got a speed limiter.
heck....be happy with 130. My convertible Z shuts down at about 106. I guess they thought some ididit would be out at 130 with the top down. I would be that ididit.

JeffP I didn't know that! But I did read in a post on the prom board that, like Aaron said, that the chips, I think, the later models 88 or 89 to 92 or the L98 models, had it programmed into the chip at 245 mph.
I know that my 89 I had it up to 135 mph stock and it could go alittle more not much. Now I have it modded with a custom chip and I still got it up to 135 and it still could go more but I got scared. Besides I have some bad injectors.

I'm not sure about your specific car but the speed limiter was driven by original equipment tires. Cars without speed rated tires got the limiter. My 92Z28convt has a 110 speed limiter, it starts to shut down injectors and kinda pulses the engine. The only way to get rid of it is to either reprogram the chip or go with an aftermarket one.

I bought the car used, but it's got the WS6 package, so it should have had the Z-rated tires. And since I'm using the Hypertech chip that shouldn't matter, should it? Is it possible that Hypertech programmed a speed limiter in their 305 Streetrunner chip?
