Temp gauge actin up HELP!!???

Im not sure if this belongs here or not due to the fact that its not just about TPI but here goes...
I was driving to work the other day and my temp gauge pinned I dont mean just climbed but shot up to what looks like 310 would be and it was fast if you would have blinked you would have missed it. I tryed taping on the gauge cluster and dash but it didnt help any. I turned the key off and took the key out (on the fly) restarted it and boom it was fine, back down to like 160. I have just put a coolent temp sender in it from NAPA. it did it agian today on the way home after pulling in the driveway I opened the hood (motor running) and wiggled the cuplure on the temp sender that didnt do anything I got back in and reved it up that made it come down a bit(300) but as soon as I let the gas back up,it went right back.
I dont know what the deal is Its not like low coolent or anything that would be a slow rise and the senders new?
oh ya one more thing When I poped the hood with the motor on none of the fans were on The gauge read like 310 and the computer didnt tell the fans to come on that tells me that the problem is not the sensor. Right?

help me Please

The fans are gonna activate as per the fan cooling switch on the other side of the block - the switch between your #6/#8 plugs. It appears you have an erroneous indication caused by either your temp sending unit, wiring, or the gauge itself. My guess would be the sending unit. You say you changed it once already, got it from NAPA? Did you have the problem before then? If not, I would get a sending unit (sensor) from GM and nowhere else. I have heard, but I'm sure there would be many rebuttals on this, that you shouldn't use any sensors other than GM. So there you go - my $.02

ÄI had the same problem on my other car. I changed the sending unit and clean the connectors and the ground, never had a problem since that with the temp. gauge.
