'89 is supposed to be the magic year in which the all-knowing GM engineers discovered that they only need eight injectors. So what people are saying is, get the '89 PROM image, put it in your ECM, remove the coldstart valve, and you're good to go. I'd like to test this on my '86, but nobody has the '89 image to share, so it seems.

I heard they're only $30 from the dealer, maybe I'll just buy one and share it with you guys.

The cold start injector is kinda like a choke on a carburetor. It feeds extra fuel for I believe about 8 seconds during cranking. You can take it out, but it will result in a hard starting condition when the motor is less than like 150*. The definate upgrade would be to go to the 89 programing (it was the only non CSI/w MAF) and keep the closed loop, and cold idle code the same, just use your existing WOT code.

Why did they dump that cold start injector? Was there a real reason, or just for kicks?

I remember back in 88 there was a guy at the track who had a 87 iroc and was using the 9th injector as enrichment for his nitrous system. I dont know how he was triggering it, but it was pretty wild for the time. There were no nos steups for these cars back then.

My guess as to why they eliminated it is because it probably cost more to include it than to not include it! Cost is king, you know.. Whoever came up with that idea probably became employee of the year!

Other benefits to NOT having the 9th injector would probably be easier assembly, more reliable product, etc..

Why do you want to get rid of it? Space constraints? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
