Whats a good l98 60 ft stock?
hey guys, just lookin over my slips from the last trip to dragway42, was wondrering what a good 60 ft is for stock t/a's firebirds, gta's, and such.
i had a 2.1, two 2.2's and a 2.3 with a passenger and hot car. all passes were over 220* coolant with 225 70 16's (hp 259's suck!) and zero wheelspin.
honestly as hard as the car takes off im surprised it gets such good traction out of the hole. no one came close all night, i even took out a 2000 ish mustang with dr's off the line.
best run of the night was a sleeper turbo vw. mid eighties, with a turbo that you couldn't hear at idle, i left him in smoke but then i hear WHOOOOOOOSSSH from not that far behind me and it dawned on me that i was facing a light turbo car... still got him but only cause he missed a shift, he trapped at 101mph as compared to my consistant 91 mph's. bet that thing was good for 13's with a better 60 and proper shifting..

Re: Whats a good l98 60 ft stock?
you have a l98? or the 305? i've seen 305's run 14.9's in verts. the car has mid to high rpm issues, not really surprising considering the combo but i hope to see 14's the next time i'm at the track. i think the taller tires are actually helping, since i have zero wheel spin, why run wider tires? the "longer" gears lend themselves to tpi anyways.. besides my ac compressor was locked up the last time i was there and now that compressor resides in my garage along with the rest of the ac components, i dropped maybe 20 lbs off the nose with cruise control, and ac parts removed, next step is air pipes so that i can change all the spark plugs from above the fenders hah.
the best run from that night:
2.15 60 ft
9.69 1/8th
69.32 mph 1/8th
15.137 1/4 et
91.10 1/4 mph
----------
i had way less gas then you, 1/4 tank, but my temps were horrendous. all above 220, had more cooling issues then then now, still have them tho can't figure it out.

2.01 was the best with the current car. = L98 - 700R4 (2800 stall converter ) - 2.77 and 3.27 gears
Got a 1.97 with the old 87 IROC = L98 - 700R4 (2200 stall converter )- 3.27 gears
and 1.98 with the 86 Firebird. = L98 - T5 - 3.23 gears.
All 3 were on regular street tires.

Re: Whats a good l98 60 ft stock?
so im actually running okay. not great not bad, but okay. 85 drop top, thats a pretty fast run, but i don't get how you could run the same 60 as my best run, and only 3 mph faster at the end of the track, but get 6 tenths off your time? what was your eighth on that run?
----------
i wonder how much colder coolant, cooler temps and a decent CAI would do for me, i'm trying to hit 14's the next time i'm at the track.. i have the 87 intake thats pretty much crap,i've read that a new one makes a fair SOTP difference

Re: Whats a good l98 60 ft stock?
i think you could do mid 1.9's on street tires with a stock L98. need good track prep and tires tho, else they will spin
with full exhaust and 2800 stall and 2.77 gears on street tires, i've been 1.89 and consistant 1.93-1.96
with slicks and 3.42 gears i went 1.74
my buddy with full bolt ons and stock converter and 3.70 gears on street tires go's low 1.9's as well. runs 13.6 at 99

Re: Whats a good l98 60 ft stock?
My best 60' was 2.140 on a 14.840 Second - 92.677 MPH run.. This was with older P245/50-ZR16 Firestone Firehawk tires on a bone stock L98 GTA.
Normally it's 2.2+ I wish I could remember what I did that day
With some sticky slicks, I think I could get into the 1.9's easy..... But not with these Firehawks...

Re: Whats a good l98 60 ft stock?
The key is the launch and low end of the track, at the top the stock TPI is running out of steam since it's losing power after around 4500 or so.
My friends car, the last time we were at the track was short shifting and losing a lot the first part of the track but runs strong up to 6500 RPM so was still making decent MPH. 13.0@109

Re: Whats a good l98 60 ft stock?
okay i can see that, what's your launch technique? i just punched it off idle, makes for a good show as my competitor revs her up and i sit there at idle only to leave them behind at the lights,, makes you feel like a torque god!! that's also why thirdgens dominate on the streets, kill em off the line, let of after second gear winds out and let em cruise by, settles most arguments.

Re: Whats a good l98 60 ft stock?
Try different RPMS and see how it affects the 60 ft. My cars seemed to like 1500-2000 and rolling into the throttle hard. I tried to give it as much RPM as it would take without spinning.

rockit,
A good launch comes down to getting to know your car. You have to feel it out and "walk the line". Step on the brakes and rev the motor up to that point where your just about to lose traction (2-2200). Then let go of the brakes, leave your foot of the gas at the same point for .3 sec relatively, then gradually apply gas till you reach wot. It just takes time be patient. If you wanted to practice this, a good freeway on ramp with a straight away rather than banked turn would help. It goes without saying to be careful of other people around you, not to try this during traffic, etc etc. Have to bust out the disclaimer!! Be safe and have fun learning more about your car.

I was able to cut a couple 1.9 60's with my L98 when the car was mostly stock. 255/50/16 bfg g-sports. I liked those tires a lot for the price.
Now with the 6 spd a little bit more power i have trouble even getting consistant 2.0 60's...

Re: Whats a good l98 60 ft stock?
hmm, my experience with my ol' l03 car was always to just punch it, the torque comes in so low on those cars, made for more consistant runs, and at 42 its real hard to not spin at the lights. i'll try revvin it up a bit next time, see if it launches any harder. still comparing my 60's, especially with my 225 60 16's i'm doin okay. my tires are about 1/4-1/2 inch taller then my other 245's but hugely narrower, at least an inch, i could rev it up higher with my gsc's. i might throw them on, be a funny lookin gta with 92 camaro rims on it.

Re: Whats a good l98 60 ft stock?
aight, went back to 42 on tuesday, pretty happy, in fact i'm shocked. here's the best past of the night:
60ft;2.15(spinning off the line, time for tires
)
330:6.0
1/8th et: 9.3
1/8 mph:73.90
1/4ET: 14.62(former best 15.1)
1/4mph:94.71(former best 91.1)
the changes i made since my last trip down there:
1)less fuel in the tank, had just under a 1/4 tank this time, of high octane
2)stripped a/c and a few other small things
3)much cooler car, was never over 200 vs never under 220 last time
4)removed my air filter and the top of the coffee can that it sits in, i have the crappy 87 intake setup still
so minor weight reduction on the nose, better temps, and no air filter and some high octane netted me 5 tenths of a second. i'm all grins about it. i still have all my emmisions equipment and a stock crappy ABWT tune, lookin for another two tenths when i finally get to tune her and strip the AIR stuff.
so whatcha think did it for me? i'm spinning off the line a little now, so it's time to dump these turd tires and find some stickies, should help the 60 ft. but in retrospect, i have the same 60 ft about, with alot more wheelspin so theres some potential there..

Re: Whats a good l98 60 ft stock?
Always nice to see changes pay off with improvements. My 87 IROC pulled a 16.43 at like 84 MPH the first time I ever went to a track. With me learning, and doing just the small things.. mostly replacing stuff that formers owners neglected.. I was able to get it to the 14.21 @94 before I sold it.
My current car hasn't been so much fun in that regard. It's gotten 14.7s all 3 tiems I took it to the track. I even swapped gears, throttle body, injectors, slight custom tune, AFPR.. and no change.. lol of course that was when the trans decided to not shift out of second.
After everything I have changed this year, I'll be selling the car if it does another 14.7 next month.

Re: Whats a good l98 60 ft stock?
i think you'll regret selling a real iroc if it's clean, in a couple years the gta's irocs and others are going to blow up the scene, i'm allready seeing alot of custom 3g's around. has to do with the age of people, the guys that had these cars brand new when they were 22 ish are now 42ish and wanting to regain their youth, and they have money now sooo.
just start lookin into the car man, something's restricting airflow i bet. besides if its that consistant, bracket it and win some cash to pay for the mods, a consistant car pays, fast cars just suck up cash. there was a guy everyone feared at 42 when i worked there, name was brian and he had a 70's AMC comodore, i think thats what it was called. it ran 17's but he knew what it would do and could knock out 13 and 14 second cars all night. he ended up taking mr.wensday night two years running with that car and his hornet. he probably won three times what he payed for that car in bracket racing.
if you really want it faster, datalog it and see whats what. i allready know i have at least two tenths in IAT and other small things (when my coolants 220, my IAT reads 210

Re: Whats a good l98 60 ft stock?
I was mostly being funny. I have way to much into the car to sell it at this point ( time and effort as well as $$$ ) Since the last time to the track, I'll have added - rebuilt T56 in place of lame shifting 700R4, Dana44 with 4.10s and Detroit Trutrac, subframe connecters, tubular LCAs and Panhard, Magnaflow exhuast, Spohn adjustable rod end torque arm, relocation brackets. I think that's the majority of the stuff that should effect the timeslip. Oh yeah and subframe connectors. I also swapped to a speed density set up.
So once it's running again and I start playing with tuning it a little... I am hoping to see some improvements
LOL At this point I'll just be glad to drive it again.
Oh and the last time I was driving it I had someone ask if I wasinterested in selling it. I declined
I have a few pics at http://www.blk-wdw.com It's not nearly as nice as as some cars here, but it's not too bad looking when I clean it up.

nice. this whole gta/ws6 driveline and suspension is going into the camaro eventually, thinkin bout getting badges made that fit where th "rs" is supposed to be that say ws6. might even swap in the gta digital dash and a few other things but prob just the driveline. trying to be a mostly factory car while still very unique

Re: Whats a good l98 60 ft stock?
okay third trip to the track, third time ive gotten faster. i don't have the slip with me right now to quote it but i ran a 14.49 in the 1/4 and my 60 ft was a 2.0, my mph dropped a bit, like 2 tenths of a mph, but i attribute that to the starting line hooking VERY well that night. made four or five passes and got knocked out in the brackets cause i broke out. i'm still on a stock tune, so i'm hopin for a bit more out of it after i actually do some work, this gta should be good for low 14's. the only differences this time were we stripped out the upright portion of the rear seats, and also the six by nines since i don't have a radio anyways. we're talking minor weight reduction plus good traction netted me another tenth and a half, i'm still even on the stock 87 air bellows, the really crappy one, and burnt wires sooo,,, dunno these jasper crate engines must not be that bad.
i'm hoping for mid thirteens in the camaro with this motor after i siamese the intake and optimize all the peices parts, do a little tiny bit of head work and put in a better cam plus full exhaust. probably going to put juice to it as well and try to go 12's

Re: Whats a good l98 60 ft stock?
hey, yea thats pretty much all that dway 42 is good for, their starting pad is really well done it's just the rest of the racetrack that sucks.. i'm pretty happy, i payed 2000 for a top of the line gta with maf and i haven't even done basic tune up stuff yet and i'm pullin respectable times, just got my tuning stuff yesterday, so we'll see how that all goes... keep in mind that i'm launching on 225/70/16 tires though on the very edge of wheel spin, and im launching from no throttle, works well but if i could rev it up a bit i might break into the ones on my 60.
let the real fun begin
