GM Crate Engine's...anyone use one?
Hi All,
I was looking at this crate engine on Jeg's website...
http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...52506_-1_10763
And was wondering if anyone has used one in place of thier stock 85-86 TPI engine? If so how did you like it?
I'm looking for a low cost replacement for my current one, I could get a stock 2-bolt mains rebuilt engine from O'reilly's for $995 + my core.....but am a little leery plus it's not as nice as the GM Goodrench engine that is basically brand new and a better warranty.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Heres the 2 things I dont like about it
cam, (.383''/.401'') and a 112° lobe separation
8.5:1 compression ratio

But a bigger cam and head gaskets could solve the issues. Another thing would the TPI intake fit on these heads (without modification)?

head gaskets? try head's, dump the 76cc and get some good 64cc heads

1. The price is right
2. It will run forever
3. You can burn the cheapest gas you can find in it
4. Works perfect with the stock TPI set up.
5. Probably has more power than your original motor
6. Unless you race on the street, you'll have fun with it.

hmm..
1)I can build better for less
2)true
3)true, but stock TPI is around 9.5:1 and you can run 87 octain with it too
4)not really, would need tunning and intake might need to be modified, nothing major if you know what your doing
5)no way, well maybe barly over a stock 86 305 TPI, but not my origanal motor, lol
6)whats gonig fast have to do with street racing? something you might want to look into but they do make tracks in north america
besides I wasnt thinking 454 with a .600lift cam, more along the mile of stock compression at least and a .450 lift cam since its obviose he's not after anything crazy like

I have used a GM crate motor in my `74 El Camino and love it, have not tried one in my `88 Iroc yet. Be careful what you buy, some crate engines are not for fuel injection, carb only.

Re: GM Crate Engine's...anyone use one?
I had a friend use a brand new GMPP ZZ4 shortblock that lasted maybe 500 miles after one of the rods went through the oil pan after 3/4 of a lap of Road America and set the front of his '90 Corvette on fire from the oil hitting the hot brake rotors.
Their crate motors seem to be hit or miss.
