Today is a sad day!
Hey guys, if you read my sig you can see I'm having a tranny shop put a new TQ converter in my car. Well, I just got a call from them and the news could not be any worse. The guy told me my trans was fried, from the pump to the 2-4 clutch pack. He told me he could build it to bulletproof specs; like putting a billet servo, a new band made out of....I forget now...I think nomar or something, a new vane for more pressure among other things, however is not gonna be cheap.......he said $1600 including taxes. Is this a good price for a trans that will hold "anything I throw at it" according to him. They did a job for me (install a new shifter cable) and charged me $177 compare to more than $300 from AAMCO and other places, so that makes me feel a lil bit better. I apologize for the crying guys, but I don't make a whole lot being in the Air Force.
Thanks for your patience.

If that includes installation and everything it may not bee too bad. TPI sells race built 700R4's for $1295 with torque converter. Sorry to hear about the tranny.

It's something like Transmission Parts of Indiana. They advertise in Super Chevy and other mags and usually show up at Super Chevy shows etc. I have one of their 2025 stall converters in may car now. Made some difference over my stock converter. I've heard pretty good stuff about them. Stay away from AAMCO, those guys are *****ing rip-off artists

Strange, they were able to tell you all of that just by installing a torque convertor??
A bulletproof trans sounds very appealing, but if you're strapped for cash, a junkyard trans sounds like a good idea.
Oh and a B&M "super rebuild kit" with all the clutches & bands & etc is only $300. You might want to get a price breakdown of that $1600. Labor for rebuilding the trans should be exactly the same as it would be for doing a stock rebuild. The only difference would be the parts!

Well, the car is already done......the reason why they found out about the tranny being burnt is because I told them it was leaking from somewhere in between the front pump and the converter, so the were going to see what was wrong and replace the seal if necessary. I believed they guys, not only because I've seen some of the parts and because I ran the tranny 2 quarts low for a long time, but because of the way the tranny was feeling very weird lately; for example, when I would rev the engine on neutral, it used to have a sound very similar to engine knock and also, under normal driving above 50mph, when i would let off the gas it would really vibrate between 49 and 47 mph. last but not least, they are giving me a 12000 miles or 1 year whichever comes first warranty (for a car that's gonna see more abuse than a battered woman?), I don't think that's too bad.

Holy $hit! They charged you $122 to install a shifter cable? Even if their idiots that's about $50 an hour. You can get a TCI or B&M 700r4 for around $1200 plus installation shouldn't run more than $150.
If you do let them do it, make sure you get a DAMN GOOD warranty...and double-check that there are no clauses about "abuse" or "racing" in it.

I had mine built for $1200 with all the stuff listed in my sig. the max HP a 700r4 can handle is about 500hp-600hp with all race parts (the guys from TPI told me that) my trans should hold up to about 450-500. hope your trans shop holds their word on the warenty, most places jack you over. As soon as i get some more stuff on my car, im switching to a TH400 w/a gear vendors overdrive, all from TPI for like $3000 i think, it will hold up to about 800-900hp and over 1000ft/lbs. of torque. The overdrive unit actually makes it a 6 speed, its totally bad a$$. ok im done running at the keyboard now.

Man, for that money I would buy me a 6 speed and really have fun (except when going to Mcdonalds' drive through and busy freeways). If you put an aluminum flywheel and good clutch setup, you can have an engine that will rev much faster and handle a lot of power (much more than you seem to have according to your sig)
Good luck

The cam I put in my car is part #: 249-08-432-8 from the Jeg's Catalog.
Specs: 230/236* duration, 510/520" lift with 1.5 rockers and 110* lobe separation angle with a range of 2200-5800 RPMs
The idle with this cam is somewhat rough, but I must tell you the car feels really strong and big torque at any RPM is as easy as smashing the throtle down. It dropped my times nearly 5 tenths (from 13.99@98MPH to 13.51@102) **best MPH to date is 104.23 with only the addition of the TQ converter switch mod**

Best 60'(with cam already installed) 1.90 sec on street tires, no trick suspension parts with the exception of sway bars removed.

Depending on your mechanical skills you could rebuild this on your own, I did mine in a day and a half with hand tools nothing more than that and the Haynes GM transmission rebuilding guide. with a TCI kit new convertor and a few extras I was into mine a little more than 400.
