What to do with a 85 305 TPI engine

I just got an 85 IROC from a kid that just rebuilt it in auto shop class, and didn't do a very good job. I'm going to pull it and go thru it again. What should I do with it? I am probably working with a $1000.00 budget.

the basics, rings, bearings, oil pump, timing chain new rod bolts. bore it if you have too and new pistons. for up grades i'd look at cam, heads, and headers. AFPR will help. i'm sure i've exceded your budget, but you get an idea.

Get a cheap reman. 350, some 22lb injectors, and a good chip.

if you're sticking w/ the 305, the best thing you can do for the engine is get a good cam and some 305 torquer (I think that's what they're called) heads. You should still come in under budget.

summit sells a rebuild kit for 5-600 bucks, to replace all of bottom end, and im sure the parts are of good quality, and even if they do break, summit has a great reputation of standing behind their products. get a flat tappet cam(like yours is already) for another 100 bucks.
